CaseLayer: matter management for the way modern law firms actually work.

CaseLayer is a matter, document, and time management platform with native AI document review. It serves boutique firms and in-house legal teams that need real LegalTech without paying $40k a year for it.

The Challenge

A 22-attorney litigation boutique was losing 11% of billable time to admin work, missing deadlines on calendared filings, and using three separate tools for matter notes, document storage, and time entry. They considered Clio Manage and Litera but both were too expensive and too generic.

What I Built

Matter dashboard with parties, deadlines, document inventory, billing snapshot, and AI-generated case summary.
AI document review: drag in a PDF set, get clause extraction, redline suggestions, and a structured findings table.
Deadline engine that ingests calendar invites, court rules, and email and surfaces "what's due next" with calendar overlays.
Time tracking that auto-suggests entries from calendar, email, and document activity. Attorneys approve, edit, or reject.
Conflict-check workflow with a vector search across past matters.

Technical Foundation

Frontend: Next.js + Tailwind + Radix UI, very keyboard-driven
Backend: NestJS + Postgres + pgvector + S3 for document storage
AI: Claude 3.5 Sonnet for document review + GPT-4o for structured extraction; per-firm fine-tuned embeddings
Infra: AWS (RDS, S3, ECS), HIPAA-compliant document handling, single-tenant deployments available
Search: hybrid (Postgres FTS + pgvector + reranker)

Outcome

Billable-time recapture up to 14% via auto-suggested time entries.
Document review turnaround down 62% (12 hours to 4.5 hours per matter on average).
Replaced 3 SaaS tools, ~$640/mo saved per attorney seat.
