a16z Podcast Trailer: Launching the Machine Age Fund

A 56-second trailer for a16z's roundtable launching the Machine Age Fund, cut down from a 54-minute conversation about the AI infrastructure bottleneck.
Karina from a16z reached out about a concept trailer
The episode was the roundtable announcing a16z's Machine Age Fund: Ben Horowitz, Martin Casado, and Raghu Raghuram with Erik Torenberg, unpacking why the bottleneck in AI is shifting from the models to the infrastructure underneath them. 54 minutes of dense infrastructure economics. My job was to get it under a minute.

The constraint

Four speakers, no single clean host-guest hook, and a topic (chip supply, power, cooling, data center buildout) that doesn't explain itself in a soundbite. Most people will hit this on mute. It had to argue the thesis visually, without just captioning it.

How I picked the cut

I opened on the thesis straight into the claim that the constraint on AI just moved from the labs to the physical world underneath them. Same principle I use on every trailer: engineer OPEN LOOPS, don't resolve them.
Every spoken line runs as kinetic type on the interview footage itself, so the trailer reads with sound off. Where the argument turns technical, I cut in macro shots (chip sockets, cooling hardware) and number callouts pulled straight from the conversation, like the "sold out to 2028" supply line, so the abstract argument has something concrete to land on.
The trailer states the tension and stops. It doesn't answer whether hardware founders can actually out-execute the incumbents. That's what the 54-minute conversation is for.

The result

A 56-second trailer built as a project for a16z's content team, using the same packaging approach I run on every podcast trailer: open on the idea, caption for sound-off viewing, and never let the trailer answer what the episode is for.
