Independent Editorial Design | Biographical Book | 50 pages
This editorial project was developed as a biographical publication centered on the life, political stance, and artistic legacy of American sculptor Alexander Calder, highlighting his anti-fascist views and the social context behind his work.
I was independently commissioned by an international art critic to lead the editorial design of this piece, with the goal of creating a visually striking and conceptually aligned book. The result is a 50-page publication that combines curatorial depth with bold visual storytelling.
My contributions as editorial designer included:
Full design of cover and interior layout using Adobe InDesign and Illustrator
Modular grid layout and fluid typographic hierarchy for an engaging reading experience
Custom vector illustrations inspired by Calder’s “Clouds” installation at the Aula Magna (Central University of Venezuela)
A color palette directly derived from Calder’s sculptures — bold reds, blacks, and yellows — symbolizing resistance, energy, and movement
Print simulation on Fedrigoni Sirio Pearl premium paper, adding texture and elegance to the final concept
Format: A4 size (closed), softcover binding, designed for distribution in cultural spaces, museums, and contemporary art events.
Creative challenge:
The main challenge was to visually honor Calder’s kinetic and political work without overwhelming it. I built a visual language that echoed his mobiles through intentional negative space, balanced composition, and dynamic visual rhythm. This allowed the editorial design to stand on its own while still engaging with Calder’s legacy.
Projected impact:
This book was developed as part of a curated editorial collection for a global art foundation, aimed at celebrating 70 years of Calder’s artistic presence in Latin America. It serves as both a visual archive and a platform for critical reflection — an example of how editorial design can become a tool for cultural memory and artistic discourse.
