Password Import Initiative for Quest

Shipping Quest's first password import to keep users in the headset.

Media consumption — especially Netflix — is one of the top reasons people buy a Quest. Yet logging in was so painful it was quietly driving abandonment. I led the 0→1 initiative to bring password import to Quest, reducing the single biggest source of input fatigue in the browser.

Phase 1 of a 3-phase vision I authored

01 — Problem

Over half of Quest headsets sold were reportedly tried once and never used again. Media consumption — Netflix, YouTube, Prime Video — is one of the top reasons people buy a Quest in the first place. I went through the actual first-run experience and was shocked at how hard the simplest thing was: logging in.

02 — Operational friction

Input fatigue compounded across the entire first session:
Typing in VR is roughly 4× slower than on a phone, and far less accurate
Passwords live on a different device — users had to physically remove the headset to retrieve them
Every media app required its own login, repeating the same friction
Quest had no parity with desktop or mobile browsers, which had supported password import for years

03 — Systems thinking

I spotted this gap months before it was formally prioritized, reframing it as a retention problem, not a browser feature. I audited password import across Chrome, Safari, Edge, and Firefox, mapped Quest's cross-device story (effectively nonexistent), and authored the definitive product vision for system-level password imports — still referenced inside Meta today.

04 — Key decisions

Frame it as churn, not a feature
Sequence the vision into 3 phases
Reject the wizard, embrace the settings pattern
Design in-headset, not in Figma alone

05 — Workflow architecture

Phase 1 — File-based password import
Learn what import is
Export on desktop Chrome/Safari
Send file to headset cross-device transfer
Import in Settings scrollable sub-page
Verify confirmation + autofill

06 — Outcome

Phase 1 shipped in December 2024 — Quest's first-ever password import feature. The work reduced friction on the highest-churn moment of the Quest experience — first-session logins to media apps — and the product vision I authored continues to guide how Meta thinks about cross-device account portability in XR.
