Everyone wishes acne was something they only experienced as adolescents. Truth is, it can follow us well into our adult lives. As we age, our skin begins to react to the fluctuations that are happening with our hormones. Unusual changes in the skin such as severe dryness, thinning of the skin, oiliness, redness, and acne that seem to appear overnight may also be an indicator it’s time to get your hormone levels checked out. A drop in estrogen or imbalance of androgen levels could be the culprit here, and not necessarily an environmental effect. As adults, it is normal to experience acne from time to time but unusual changes in the skin such as severe skin dryness, skin thinning, oily skin, and acne breakouts can be caused by dropping levels of estrogen or an imbalance of the natural androgen levels.
