Overview

Smallcase is a thematic investment platform that allows users to invest in curated portfolios of stocks and ETFs.
This independent product case study explores how to improve activation rates for new and passive investors who struggle with decision paralysis when faced with too many investment options.

✨ Research & Discovery

To understand why investors hesitate or avoid using investment platforms, I conducted primary research combining qualitative interviews and quantitative validation.

User Interviews

I spoke with 3 early-career professionals (20-25 minute sessions each) with varying investment exposure - SIP investors, stock investors, and crypto-first investors. These conversations revealed behavioral patterns and emotional barriers that numbers alone wouldn't capture.

Key Behavioral Patterns:

Most started investing after their first salary
Investments were heavily influenced or managed by trusted people (family/friends)
Strong preference for low-effort, long-term investing (SIPs, "set and forget")
Light tracking behavior - users mostly checked total value/profit occasionally

Decision-Making Patterns:

Strong reliance on external guidance from family members or friends with investing knowledge
Low confidence in choosing funds/stocks independently
When guidance disappeared, investment activity slowed or stopped entirely
One participant's experience captured the core problem:

I stopped investing because I didn't feel confident making decisions on my own once my brother got busy.

Survey Validation

To validate whether interview insights represented broader patterns, I conducted a survey with 13 respondents - mixed investors, with the majority being SIP users.

Critical Findings:

What This Confirmed:

The survey validated all interview patterns - investors prefer low-effort approaches, have moderate to low decision confidence, and find choice overload genuinely stressful.
Guidance and simplicity were strongly desired across the board.

✨ Problem Definition

Based on research insights, I identified several interconnected problems contributing to activation hesitation.

User Need:

When I want to invest my money, I want clear, trustworthy guidance, so that I can confidently choose without spending hours researching.

Core Pain Points:

Confusion About Where to Invest: Users faced with hundreds of smallcases had no clear starting point or filtering mechanism aligned to their situation.
Low Confidence in Making Decisions: Only 7.7% felt very confident. Most depended on trusted advisors - when that disappeared, so did their activity.
Dependency on External Guidance: 75% relied on friends/family, but this wasn't sustainable or scalable for consistent investing.
Research Feeling Heavy: Users wanted to learn but found self-directed research time-consuming and mentally overwhelming.

SWOT Analysis:

Problem Prioritization:

Through RICE scoring, I evaluated three hypothesized problems:
P1: Event-driven investors struggle with insufficient funds at final checkout (Medium confidence)
P2: New explorers struggle choosing first investment from wide range of options (High confidence)
P3: Portfolio optimizers get irrelevant suggestions from generic benchmarks (Medium confidence)

P2 became P0

Addressing choice overload and lack of guidance had the highest potential impact on activation.

✨ Solution Exploration:

I explored multiple solution directions to address the core problem of decision confusion and choice overload.
Smallcase-Specific Referrals: Allow existing investors to refer specific smallcases to friends/family with milestone-based rewards
Contextual Personalized Suggestions: Collect user inputs and recommend best-fit smallcases with guided roadmap
Ratings & Reviews: Let investors rate and review smallcases for social validation
Reduce Visible Choices: Show only top 3-5 smallcases to prevent overwhelm
Explain "Why Recommended": Show simple reasoning for each recommendation
Smart Onboarding Quiz: Quick quiz to map users to best-fit smallcases

Prioritization (RICE):

Smallcase-Specific Referrals:

Reach: 2, Impact: 3, Confidence: 2, Effort: 2 = RICE Score: 6

Guided Entry System:

Reach: 3, Impact: 3, Confidence: 3, Effort: 3 = RICE Score: 9
The Guided Entry System scored highest because it directly solved the root cause - users needed structured decision support, not just social validation or fewer random options.

✨ Designs:

The Guided Entry System introduces a structured onboarding flow that transforms Smallcase from an open marketplace into a guided decision platform.

Solution Overview:

Entry trigger → 5-step quiz (< 60 seconds) → Profile summary → Personalized roadmap → Invest or edit preferences

Entry Trigger:

5-Step Quiz Flow:

Personalized Roadmap:

After completion, users see their profile summary and a curated shortlist of 3-8 smallcases matched to their inputs.

✨ Primary Goal:

Improve activation rate by ~15% in 6 months for new/passive investors by reducing decision confusion at the investment selection stage.

Expected Behavioral Shift:

From ->
Browsing endlessly without direction
To ->
Selecting from a guided shortlist with clear reasoning

Expected Impact:

Reduce decision paralysis for 92.3% who delay due to uncertainty
Provide structure for 76.9% overwhelmed by too many options
Replace external dependency for 75% relying on friends/family with platform guidance
Position Smallcase as a structured investment partner rather than just a discovery marketplace

Pitfalls & Mitigations:

Risk: Users skip the quiz
Mitigation: Short flow, clear value prop, contextual entry
Detection: Quiz start & completion rate
Risk: Users don't trust recommendations
Mitigation: Explain "why recommended", show fit score
Detection: Investment rate from recommendations
Risk: Recommendation logic gives poor matches
Mitigation: Clear risk explanation, editable profile
Detection: 30-day churn rate
Risk: Users answer dishonestly
Mitigation: Behavioral questions, microcopy clarity
Detection: Completion time anomalies
