Stampchain: full redesign of a Bitcoin Stamps explorer

Daniel Petrevski

Stampchain is where people create, collect and trade Bitcoin Stamps, NFTs stored directly on the Bitcoin blockchain. The core team had spent a year on the protocol and the indexer. From May to July 2024 I was the only designer on the product, working with the core team and one developer who built each page as I finished it. Stampchain.io runs on this design today.

An overview of the ecosystem, not a single grid

The homepage became a summary of what is happening across Stamps: a featured carousel the team can use to promote projects, top and new stamps and tokens in a sortable table, and a row for each kind of activity. No Buy now buttons on the homepage. Buying happens on the stamp page, where the full details are.

Filters where people actually browse

The team had singled out the old explorer's filters. I moved them into the explorer pages behind one Filter button next to search, grouped into sorting, what to show and stamp type.

Everything a collector checks before buying

Creator, transaction, block, supply and whether a stamp is locked, divisible or keyburned sit in one panel next to the artwork, with copy buttons on the long IDs and hashes. Dispensers, holders, sales, transfers and vaults moved into tabs, so the page stays short and each table gets full width.

Know the cost before you mint

Minting a stamp costs real Bitcoin fees that depend on network traffic. The stamping tool puts the upload and a preview side by side, then a fee rate slider with the recommended rate, then the estimated total before the Mint button.

Every page, designed for a phone too

I designed a mobile version of each page, so the developer had a real layout for small screens instead of squeezing the desktop one.

Designing while the site was being built

I worked four to five hours a day with the core team in a shared Telegram group. I asked for requests in one feature list instead of long chat threads, shared each page for review, and handed it over while I moved to the next. By the end of July the team said the frontend was done apart from minor details they could fix in code.

"You're really killing it!" Stampchain core team, June 2024

See it live at stampchain.io. The site has grown since 2024, so some details differ from these screens. Full case study on danielpetrevski.com.
