Co.Lab, a non-profit organization, aims to find a more effective solution for language learners. However, learners often struggle to keep up with the learning process. Our goal is to enhance conversational language learning and boost learners' confidence in communicating with native speakers.
I collaborated with 2*developers and 1*product manager to create a Chrome extension that provides an engaging experience for language learners to enhance their listening and pronunciation abilities while streaming Netflix.

4 Big obstacles when learning a new language
In 2020, 30 million people attempted to learn a new language for various reasons. These included planning to travel to a foreign country, communicating with relatives who speak the language, and understanding dramas without subtitles.
However, the current methods they are using—physical classes, online learning, and apps—have proven to be ineffective.
In 2020, Michigan State University conducted a study using Babbel, a popular subscription-based language learning app, A test was taken by 54 students at MSU before and after 12 weeks of studying and 36% of participants quit halfway.
Recognizing that Sarah is not alone in her language learning journey, I empathetically conducted 7 one-on-one user interviews to understand the methods and tools utilized by language learners in the market.
Building upon the insights gathered from the user interviews, I conducted a comprehensive competitor analysis. This analysis allowed me to examine the existing landscape and identify any gaps or untapped opportunities within the market.
Most of the apps are good for beginners and are being used to supplement the user’s study. HelloTalk is great for practicing and memorizing vocabularies, and Teuida for dialogues. However, the problem here is to open the app and keep persistent!

Despite busy schedules, people are still willing to dedicate time to watch Netflix or videos on YouTube. There is an opportunity to enhance the viewing experience by offering content with dual subtitles and providing convenient ways to review the content.
During the interviews, I asked all participants that “What app would you open every day? “
Their answer is: “ Video streaming service.” Therefore, I asked further questions if they think “ A second subtitle “ would help them to learn the content while relaxing. The response was overwhelmingly positive.

Which streaming service should we start with? And what interface should we create?

Which language to start with?
To deliver an engaging and inclusive user experience, I carefully selected accessible colors that adhere to the highest standards of web accessibility, specifically targeting WCAG AAA compliance. By prioritizing accessibility, I ensure that all users, regardless of their visual abilities, can comfortably engage with our content on the dynamic drama screen. This commitment to inclusive design allows us to create an exceptional user experience that is accessible to everyone.
We have received positive feedback from the participants. Users found the interface intuitive and easy to navigate, allowing them to seamlessly access learning materials while watching Korean videos. They appreciated the dual subtitle feature, which helped them understand the dialogue and context more effectively. Participants also found the vocabulary review tool beneficial for reinforcing their learning and expanding their language skills.
