Building a Universal Stage. Epic Games launched a global competition challenging animators to create a 10-second dance sequence using the new features in Unreal Engine 5.6. To ensure fair judging and a unified look, every entrant needed to work from the exact same project file.
My brief was to create that "Master Level." I needed to design an environment that was visually stunning out of the box but performant enough to run on a wide range of machines. It had to be a "blank canvas" that felt premium, a stage that inspired animators to push their creativity without getting bogged down in technical setup.
THE ENVIRONMENT
Optimized for Performance & Style. I designed a virtual performance stage that balanced aesthetic appeal with technical constraints.
Visual Language: I opted for a clean, high-contrast studio look. I used volumetric fog and rim lighting to separate the character from the background, ensuring the animation silhouette was always readable.
The "Plug-and-Play" Rig: I engineered the lighting setup to be dynamic. I pre-configured the exposure and post-process volumes so that users could simply drop in their animation and hit render. The goal was to give even beginner animators a "pro" look by default, encouraging higher participation rates.
Optimization: Since this asset was being downloaded by thousands of users, file size and shader complexity had to be strictly managed. I used modular geometry and instance-friendly materials to keep the project lightweight without sacrificing fidelity.
THE TRAILER
Hype & Education. Beyond the asset itself, I was responsible for the launch trailer that announced the contest to the world.
Directing the Motion: I choreographed a sequence that showcased the versatility of the new animation tools. I cut between different dance styles—from hip-hop to ballet—all occurring on the stage I built. This demonstrated that the environment could adapt to any genre.
Cinematography: I used dynamic camera moves to inject energy into the piece. The camera doesn't just observe; it participates in the dance. I timed the cuts strictly to the challenge's provided music track to create a rhythmic, high-energy edit that got the community excited to download the project.
THE RESULT
Empowering Creators. The challenge was a massive success, with thousands of unique entries submitted to ArtStation. By providing a professional-grade stage and a high-energy launch video, we removed the barrier to entry. Animators didn't have to worry about lighting or set dressing. They just had to dance.
I created the master environment and launch trailer for Epic Games' global animation contest, setting the visual standard for thousands of community submissions
