/Being Consistent is Difficult
In my first article, I said I will upload this “kinda” useless article every day.
Do I?
If you’re following me you probably know the answer,
and I’m sorry for that:)
Most times it feels so hard to bring ourselves just to sit and write. I often ask myself why… cause it’s a simple thing! Sit… and write.
Every single morning, we wake up, brush our teeth, and eat breakfast (don’t think I will add “take a bath”, I know most of you barely do that).
Waking up, brushing teeth, and eating breakfast. Simple. And we always do that every morning. It’s something we will do even we’re half asleep. We call it “morning routine”. And it has consistency.
We do it continuously and consistently that would be weird if we didn’t do it. It’s a different level of daily habits. Something we can’t get rid of easily.
Then, why do we do it?
We were “trained” to do it. Continuously. From our parents. Even from the society who showed us the things to be done every morning. It’s not in a bad meaning.
We’re trained since we were kids. At that time, our parents told us to brush our teeth right after we woke up.
Sometimes they had to force us by telling us some bad consequences that will happen if we don’t brush our teeth.
Somehow, it works. We brush our teeth every morning continuously and consistently. Like we’re having on autopilot.
What if I want to change it?
I want to add a new feature to my autopilot. I want to write for medium after brushing teeth. Not eating breakfast like I used to do. Starting from tomorrow. Will it work?
It will. But I’m sure it will stop on the 3rd day. Because I did. The autopilot setting is corrupt and needs to be repaired. I need something to push myself.
It’s so simple. Just read a book. But it’s difficult to make it a routine cause I don’t have enough reasons WHAT FOR I’m doing it for.
And that’s the problem. I don’t find it necessary enough. While there’s nobody to remind me to write. Nobody warned me about the bad consequences that may happen like how my parents warned me to brush my teeth.
Reasons will lead you
If one big reason doesn’t enough, find a bunch of reasons.
Let’s take another simple example. Adults go to work every single morning. Right after brushing teeth, right after having breakfast.
For what?
For earning money.
What will happen if they’re refused to go to work? Most of them can’t eat. Of course, it’s a great problem.
Backup plan: Let people push you
Like going to work or school. We’re pushed by people. Maybe our boss, colleagues, or even our classmate’s crush.
If we don’t have enough reason and we can’t make it simple, we just have these 2 options:
1. Stop it
2. Let people stop us from stopping it.
Start it simple
The most important thing about consistency is making it simple. Yes, it will make a small impact. But remember Bruce Lee’s famous quote?
“I fear not the man who has practiced 10,000 kicks once, but I fear the man who had practiced one kick 10,000 times.”
Once again. Just like brushing our teeth. Do it over and over. Sometimes it is forced and it’s okay.
The impact…?
It can last forever.
