Redesigning my portfolio

Designing a personal website, especially one that markets my skills to the world is always difficult. I set out to make a website that showcases my abilities as a designer and developer, but isn't so busy that it gets in the way of its overall purpose - to show user's my work and have them contact me.

Simplicity vs delight

This is the area that I found difficult to navigate - where do I bring in extra design elements and where do I keep things simple? I worked to give every single piece some sort of personality to it, and to bring micro animations (or 'delights') everywhere I could without getting in the user's way.

Showing the work

Having both case studies and 'featured work' I had to come up with a way to differentiate the 2, but to bring an interesting layout to both sections. The case studies reflect my ability to manage a project from the top down, overseeing all aspects. Featured work was simply work I was a team member on.

Case studies

Case studies fully layout the process and my decision making process, and takes the user through every step.

Featured work

Featured work highlights web projects I was a team member on, rather than someone who was completely in charge of the process.

Conclusions

Designing a portfolio is hard. Showcasing yourself is difficult and it is a struggle to walk the line between good design and over-indulgent. I feel like I was able to accomplish this (after about 60 iterations) and in the end came up with something I can be proud of. It is developed by me as well in Webflow, which is a huge victory.
