For a self-guided project, I crafted a variant remote design for Roku to be able to utilize iPads as possible remotes, thereby utilizing the device’s larger screen space to maximize potential areas of interaction and reduce error rates in clicking in accordance with Fitt’s law — which states that the time it takes for a user to engage with an object is relative to its size and the distance to it.
In working on this project, I found similarities between this concept and the Xbox Adaptive Controller, devices designed primarily to meet the needs of gamers with limited mobility. I believe that the larger screen space affords more accessibility to mobility-impaired users who have difficulty using a smaller device to interact with their TV or streaming devices.
