The objective of this dashboard is to provide a comprehensive analysis of the socioeconomic landscape across U.S. states by examining key metrics such as Mean Income, Poverty Rate, and Income Inequality (measured by the Gini Index). The dashboard aims to offer insights into how these factors correlate and vary across different states, enabling users to identify patterns, outliers, and trends.
Key Components:
1. AVG Poverty Rate by State:
A geographical representation of the average poverty rate across U.S. states. The map uses bubble sizes to represent the total population, while the color gradient highlights the poverty rate, allowing users to quickly identify areas with higher or lower poverty levels.
2. Bottom States by Mean Income:
• A bar chart displaying the bottom 20 states ranked by average mean income. This chart highlights the states with lower income levels, providing insights into regions that might be economically disadvantaged.
3. Top States by Mean Income:
• A complementary bar chart that shows the top 20 states ranked by average mean income. This visualization focuses on the wealthiest regions, offering a contrast to the bottom states and highlighting economic disparities.
4. Income vs. Gini Index:
• A scatter plot analyzing the relationship between Mean Income and the Gini Index (a measure of income inequality). The size of the bubbles represents the total population, and the color gradient reflects the poverty rate. A trend line is included to help users discern any correlation between income levels and income inequality.
Process:
• Data Cleaning: The data was sourced from multiple datasets, including Mean Income, Poverty Rate, and Population data, which were cleaned and merged to create a comprehensive dataset.
• Data Visualization: The dashboard was constructed using Tableau, with various visualizations like maps, bar charts, and scatter plots to represent the data effectively. Filters were carefully chosen and applied to maintain a balance between interactivity and clarity.
• Trend Analysis: A trend line was added to the scatter plot to examine the correlation between income and inequality, revealing a minimal relationship in the analyzed data.
This dashboard offers an accessible and interactive way to explore the socioeconomic conditions across U.S. states. By visualizing the data through various lenses—geographic, economic, and inequality-related—users can gain a deeper understanding of the factors contributing to economic disparities in the United States.
