Building characters whose histories, relationships, and choices shape their world
Role: Author & Character Developer Focus: Fantasy character development, motivations, relationships, and narrative connections

Project Overview

For my original fantasy novel set in Mirum, I developed Ariane Lioraine and Prince Evander Glass into layered characters with distinct histories, motivations, fears, and moral conflicts. Their profiles explore how family relationships and social institutions influence both their personal identities and the choices available to them.
This personal project demonstrates my approach to character creation and development through two illustrated profiles and a companion relationship map.

The Challenge

Ariane and Evander needed to feel like individuals with lives beyond their roles as romantic leads. Their backgrounds also needed to connect meaningfully to Mirum’s culture, laws, and inherited power structures.
The challenge was to develop strengths and flaws that could produce believable tension, while giving each character independent goals and reasons to connect with the other.

My Approach

I connected each character’s history to their present behavior, exploring how formative experiences influence trust, ambition, self-perception, and responses to pressure. I also examined where their beliefs support them and where those same beliefs might limit their growth.
I organized the material into clear, wiki-style profiles, retained open development questions, and used a relationship map to show their connections to family members, institutions, and locations. The public samples omit ending revelations.

Featured Samples

Ariane Lioraine: Identity, Resilience & Recognition

Ariane’s development centers on the loss of her family’s standing and the erasure of her legal identity. Her resourcefulness and observation skills help her survive, while her loyalty to her father’s memory makes it difficult to imagine a life beyond her obligations.
Her profile connects these experiences to her desire for recognition, her mistrust of affection, and her struggle to distinguish preserving her family’s legacy from sacrificing herself to it.

Evander Glass: Freedom, Duty & Moral Responsibility

Evander’s development explores the tension between the freedom he expected as a second prince and the responsibilities he inherits as Crown Prince. His curiosity, compassion, and interest in history influence his understanding of Mirum’s institutions.
His profile examines how grief, family expectations, and unresolved guilt shape his fear of misusing power—and his uncertainty about what responsible leadership requires.

Relationship Map: Connecting Characters to Their World

The companion map places Ariane and Evander within their wider networks of family, loyalty, authority, and opportunity. It connects their personal struggles to Hearthwick Hold, the Registry, the Crystal Palace, and the Grand Convergence.
Their relationship grows through intellectual compatibility and shared questions about worth and justice, while their different positions within Mirum create meaningful tension.

Tools & Process

I used ChatGPT to help organize my story notes, explore development questions, format the profiles, and create concept images. I reviewed the imagery against the written physical descriptions and revised it for consistency.
The final materials use Writing with Amanda Lee’s navy and gold branding, with clear sections designed for reference and portfolio presentation.

Outcome

The project produced two detailed character profiles, matching concept images, portfolio previews, and a relationship map. Together, these samples demonstrate how I connect backstory, psychology, relationships, and setting to build characters with clear motivations and room for meaningful development.
