Personal project · The World of Heroes and Villains Role: Writer and worldbuilder Focus: Fantasy setting development, reference writing, and interconnected ecology

Project Overview

The World of Heroes and Villains is my ongoing fantasy project, begun in 2023. This case study features three connected samples: the Crownstag creature profile, the Glassbell Flower plant profile, and the kingdom of Mirum. Together, they demonstrate how I develop individual worldbuilding elements and connect them to a larger setting.

The Challenge

Worldbuilding notes can become difficult to use when details are scattered across character files, species profiles, and unfinished location descriptions. Mirum already had a strong visual and cultural identity, but parts of its geography, government, economy, and history needed further development.
The goal was to organize the existing material into readable references, identify missing information, and explore how the setting’s wildlife and plants influence everyday life and political power.

My Approach

I reviewed the existing profiles for connections between environment, magical abilities, livelihoods, and cultural significance. I then organized the material into consistent wiki-style PDFs, supported by blank intake templates for future development.
For Mirum, I distinguished established details from proposed additions. This made it possible to expand the setting while keeping unresolved questions visible and avoiding accidental changes to existing lore.

Featured Samples

Crownstag: Connecting Wildlife and Culture

The Crownstag profile brings together appearance, habitat, diet, predators, behavior, reproduction, and magical abilities. Its crownlike antlers accumulate magical energy and have value as spellcasting components, while its association with nobility connects the animal to Mirum’s hunting traditions and social identity.
This sample demonstrates how a creature can serve an ecological role while also influencing a setting’s resources and symbolism.

Glassbell Flower: Giving a Plant Story Relevance

The Glassbell Flower responds to nearby active magic through light and sound. Its profile defines what those responses reveal—and their limits—alongside growth adaptations, pollination, toxicity, regional variants, and practical uses.
Its history connects directly to Mirum’s prohibition of magic. A flower once valued around magical schools becomes an object of suspicion, while a hidden specimen could expose an enchantment or a character’s emerging power.

Mirum: Building a Setting from Connected Details

The Mirum draft draws on character, animal, plant, and noble-house profiles to develop the kingdom beyond its architecture and courtly image. It connects agriculture, quarrying, healing, trade, religion, and social hierarchy to the people and species already established there.
One central tension emerged: Mirum prohibits magic while many of its valued species and traditions depend on it. Proposed explanations are clearly marked for further development rather than presented as settled lore.

Tools & Process

I used ChatGPT to assist with organizing notes, exploring connections, formatting the PDFs, and creating concept illustrations. The project’s creative direction and decisions about what belongs in the setting remain mine. Illustrations of the Crystal Palace, Hearthwick Hold, and Dragon Lake are presented as visual interpretations.

Outcome

The finished portfolio set includes three illustrated worldbuilding references and three blank intake templates. The references make the material easier to consult, while the templates provide a consistent structure for developing future creatures, plants, and locations.
This project demonstrates my approach to worldbuilding: developing details that connect to one another and give writers useful material for outlining, drafting, and revision.
