Behind the Design: Crafting Visuals for the Distortə Event

As the graphic designer for Distortə, I had the incredible opportunity to create visuals that brought awareness to an issue affecting the LGBTQIA+ community: the impact of disinformation. This article takes you behind the scenes of my design process, the inspiration behind my work, and how these visuals helped shape the event’s overall impact.

Bringing the Vision to Life

Distortə was all about shining a light on how misinformation harms LGBTQIA+ individuals. The event focused on community, resilience, and empowerment, aiming to spark meaningful conversations and inspire action. My challenge? To translate that mission into a compelling visual narrative that would resonate with attendees.

Design Inspiration

Key Themes

To capture the essence of the event, I focused on three core themes:
Community Resilience – Highlighting the strength and solidarity of the LGBTQIA+ community.
Truth vs. Misinformation – Visually representing the contrast between fact and falsehood.
Empowerment – Encouraging individuals to take action against disinformation.

Color Palette

I drew inspiration from the LGBTQIA+ pride flag, choosing a vibrant color scheme to evoke feelings of inclusivity, urgency, and hope, along with more neutral and professional tones. These colors helped reinforce the event’s message while making the visuals both engaging and impactful.

Graphic Elements That Brought Distortə to Life

Infographics

I designed infographics that broke down the impact of disinformation on mental health and social stigma. The goal was to make complex information easy to digest, so attendees could quickly grasp the seriousness of the issue.

Event Branding

From logos and banners to promotional materials, every element was designed to create a cohesive and eye-catching identity for the event. Bold typography and dynamic layouts helped draw attention and spark curiosity.

Interactive Cards

To make the experience more immersive, I designed interactive Card Toolkit that encouraged attendees to engage with the topic. QR codes linked to resources and information, allowing people to explore deeper and become part of the conversation.

The Impact: Bringing Awareness Through Design

The response from attendees was overwhelmingly positive. Many said the visuals made the event more engaging and accessible, helping them better understand the challenges posed by disinformation. Seeing my designs contribute to such important discussions was incredibly rewarding.

Final Thoughts: The Power of Visual Storytelling

Working on Distortə was a truly enriching experience—one that blended creativity with activism. Through design, I was able to help amplify a crucial message and inspire action within the community.

Join the Movement

Art and design are powerful tools in the fight against misinformation. Let’s continue using our voices, creativity, and platforms to challenge falsehoods and uplift one another. Together, we can build a world where truth prevails, and every individual is respected and valued.
