Conflict management skills for a manager

The managers are the leaders of the team. Their responsibility is to sense and resolve the conflict before it gets out of hand. If you are leading a team and have developed the following skills in yourself, you will be able to tackle team conflicts easily.

1.    Take notice

Sometimes disputes do not start from a significant issue, but the collection of little things worsens it. Some harsh remarks, inappropriate language, or a little argument could shoot up the conflict. If you notice anything wrong, don't leave it unnoticed. Immediately show the members that you will never tolerate such behavior.

2.    Observe the behavior of your team

Conflicts may happen in your absence, but some signs will help you to sense the issues. You can look for the symptoms like:
·    Changed body language of the members toward others
·    The tone of voice may to dominating or aggressive
·     Facial expressions like anger or mocking
You can differentiate your team's behavior if you know them well. Try to ease the tension as soon as possible so everyone can work better.

3.    Be unbiased

Be just and unbiased when solving a dispute between two or more individuals. Give them time and privacy to present their perspectives. Do not decide after listening to just one side story. Don’t favor anyone because of personal reasons.

4.    Intervene

Although you must listen to the matter attentively and carefully and avoid interruption, you need to intervene if the opposite member misbehaves. Keep them from attacking each other personally or cutting someone while talking.

5.    Listen to your team members

Always listen to the people involved in the dispute rather than the others, as they can exaggerate the problem. Do not assume anything by yourself or from previous scenarios. Show with your words that you may have some incomplete information and do not want to decide based on it.

6.    Patience

The resolution of conflict can be time-consuming. So, it would help if you were patient unless you have listened and solved it. Don't be aggressive as it can escalate the conflict and give it the wrong direction. It can also take time to encourage introverted employees into the discussion.
