This project was for a class offered at Lakehead University, taught by a highly accomplished professor. The project was split into two sections.

Article Pitches

First, I researched and crafted two pitches to present to popular magazines. One was for Input, which focused on greedy corporations in the gaming industry and how they have changed the space; another was for Pride Source, which examines how the Canadian housing crisis has particularly impacted the 2SLGBTQ+ community, especially teens and young adults. A published professor graded this, and it received a 96% (19.2/20). Below is a sample from the pitch to Pride Source.

This article discusses how the current housing crisis across Canada has an increased effect on 2SLGBTQ+ people. The 2017 report from the National Housing Strategy identified the 2SLGBTQ+ community as one of the 12 groups that face barriers when acquiring and maintaining housing. Not only are people in the Queer community more likely to be subject to homelessness, but they are also more likely to experience significant discrimination in housing acceptance (i.e. lease and mortgage approvals) and employment.

Written Article

The second half of this project was to dive deeper into one of our pitches and write an article that could be featured in the targeted magazines. This required attention not only to the article's content and how it would fit with the magazine's target audience. I was also required to stay within a specific word count while being as detailed as possible. The same professor graded this piece, and it received an 81%. Below is a sample from the 932-word article.

YouTube content creator and owner of Moist Esports, Charlie White, better known as MoistCr1TiKaL, took to YouTube to discuss his disappointment: “So [they’re] basically doing fucking nothing of what was advertised over the course of the last four years…[it’s] not worthy of this being called a sequel anymore. There was no reason for Overwatch 1 to have died.” (“It’s Cancelled” 6:15 - 7:12). This type of development is not at the fault of the developers when their teams are stretched thin. But this begs the question, why couldn’t Blizzard hire more developers to make good on their promises while still keeping the PvP up to par?

I researched and pitched two potential stories for two different magazines. From there, one pitch was selected and I wrote a full article to be published.
