Overview

A Safe Space for Family Stories

Memento is a social platform that empowers seniors to easily and confidently write and share their life stories. The platform recognises the unique value of lived experience and provides a user-friendly environment for creating and preserving personal memoirs.

My contribution involved designing the entire platform from scratch, conducting user research, and iteratively improving the design based on user feedback.

Key Design Outcomes:

Intuitive memoir writing experience The platform simplifies the process of creating memoirs, guiding users through the process with clear instructions and helpful prompts.

Focused on accessibility The platform incorporates accessibility features such as high-contrast colors, text resizing, audio recording, and clear text labels, ensuring usability for all users, especially seniors.

Robust privacy features The platform prioritizes user privacy, allowing users to control who can access and share their memoirs.

The Challenge

How might we empower seniors to share their life stories easily and confidently through a user-friendly memoir-writing experience that prioritises privacy?

Many seniors find it challenging to organise and preserve their life stories, often depending on unorganised Word documents or other methods that are susceptible to data loss.

The challenge was to develop a digital solution that is both user-friendly and addresses privacy concerns.

The Process

1. Sketching the Future of Memoir Sharing

The design process involved sketching user flows, defining the information architecture, and creating guiding prompts and dialogue examples. An iterative design approach ensured that the platform was user-friendly and engaging.

2.Building the Experience

Wireframes were created based on the initial design sketches, followed by usability testing to identify and address usability issues. This iterative process led to significant improvements in the user experience.

3.Usability Evaluation & Refinement

Six in-depth user interviews and usability testing sessions with couples aged 55+ were conducted to understand user needs and pain points. This research informed the design of the platform's information architecture, user flow, and interface. Key findings highlighted the need for both guided and unguided writing modes, clear instructions, and robust privacy controls.

4.Accessibility Considerations

The design incorporated accessibility features to ensure usability for all users, particularly seniors. This included high-contrast colors, text resizing, audio recording options, and clear text labels.

The Results:

The user-centered design process resulted in a platform that is intuitive, efficient, and accessible.

By addressing key usability issues identified through user research, the platform provides a more enjoyable and efficient memoir writing experience.

The focus on privacy and security ensures that users feel confident sharing their personal stories.

The strong foundation built through user research enables future development and rapid iteration based on continuous user feedback.
