🎯 THE CHALLENGE

How do you build a trusted, safe community network for a global diaspora—combining job discovery, professional networking, marketplace commerce, knowledge sharing, and social connection—while maintaining cultural identity, community safety, and legal compliance?
The core challenges:
Multi-Feature Integration: Design for LinkedIn-level job discovery, Facebook-style social feeds, Quora Q&A expertise sharing, TaskRabbit gig services, and marketplace commerce—all within one mobile-first platform without feature bloat or confusion
Identity & Safety Verification: Verify users are part of the target community (Jewish identity verification during onboarding), implement content moderation, detect spam/bot behavior, enforce account restrictions/suspensions, and maintain trust through verification badges
13+ User Personas with Conflicting Needs: Job seekers, recruiters, freelancers, services clients, content creators, social users, event organizers, sellers, donors, recipients—each requiring different workflows and feature access
Algorithmic Feed Sorting: Design feeds that surface relevant content (jobs, posts, marketplace items, services) without overwhelming users—prioritizing engagement, interest-based recommendations, and recency
Monetization Balance: Implement freemium model (free users, premium individuals, business tiers) while keeping platform accessible and avoiding paywalls that alienate community
Privacy & Anonymity: Enable "privacy mode" for profile browsing, manage relationship status visibility, enforce GDPR compliance, and build trust despite sensitive feature access
Cross-Platform Feature Complexity: Support native mobile apps (iOS/Android), web app, browser extensions, live streaming, video uploads, payment processing (App Store/Google Play/cards/PayPal), and 3rd-party integrations
Business Impact: Without intuitive UX across 6+ major feature categories and clear user education, the platform would see feature abandonment, users reverting to separate LinkedIn/Facebook/Venmo, and the competitive advantage of "all-in-one" would disappear—undermining the network effects that drive growth.
🛤️ THE JOURNEY
Discovery Phase: Multi-Persona User Research
Through interviews with 13+ user types—Sarah Levy (aspiring job seeker), David Cohen (community recruiter), Rebecca Stein (freelance designer), Miriam Katz (nonprofit founder), Eli Rosenthal (career climber), Rachel Adler (social butterfly), Mo Goldstein (content creator), Aaron Rubin (event organizer), Chaya Friedman (event seeker), Isaac Levy (generous donor), Naomi Weiss (recipient), Yosef Ben-Ari (marketplace seller)—I mapped competing workflows and feature expectations.
Key Insights:
Users want LinkedIn for jobs AND Facebook for social—not choose one or the other
Identity verification (are you Jewish?) is critical for trust and community safety
Onboarding overwhelm is real—users abandon if process is >5 steps or takes >3 minutes
Monetization must be invisible for free users; premium features should feel like "nice-to-haves," not paywalls
Community safety (spam detection, account suspension) builds trust faster than individual profile verification
This led to the core UX/UI design principle: "One Platform. Five Problems Solved. Zero Friction."

Strategic Software Design Decisions:

1. IDENTITY-FIRST ONBOARDING (UX Research + Growth Design)
Designed streamlined 7-step onboarding:
Step 1: Personal info (name, DOB, location, phone, profile photo)
Step 2: Employment (optional, skippable)
Step 3: Job-seeking intent (optional, skippable)
Step 4: Contact import (phone/email OAuth)
Step 5: Interest selection (up to 5 from 29 curated topics)
Step 6: Identity verification—Critical: "Are you Jewish?" Yes/No (gate account creation)
Step 7: Feature tour (5 slides max, all skippable)
Real-time validation, progress indicator (6/7 done), and "Welcome Home!" celebratory moment on completion. Non-Jewish users see respectful redirect: "This platform is dedicated exclusively to serving the Jewish community. Thank you for understanding."
2. INTELLIGENT MULTI-FEED SYSTEM (Dashboard Design + Growth Design)
Designed algorithmic feed combining:
Jobs Feed: Personalized job listings based on profile (experience level, industry, skills)
Social Feed: Posts from connections, groups, followed hashtags (non-chronological)
Marketplace Feed: Listings by location, category, recent activity (nearest items first)
Services Feed: Freelancers, consultants, local services matching needs
Each feed is independent—users can customize which feeds appear in bottom navigation (swappable for favorite-use shortcuts). Algorithm prioritizes:
Relevance (matching profile/interests)
Engagement (high interaction posts boosted)
Recency (light boost to new content)
Relationship depth (content from close connections prioritized)
3. JOB MARKETPLACE WITH EASY APPLY (SaaS Design + Marketplace Design)
Designed 4-step job discovery:
Browse & Search: Filter by industry (30 categories), experience level, location, employment type, company, date posted, salary range
Save Job Alerts: Store search filters, receive notifications when matches posted
Easy Apply: One-click apply using stored resume (up to 4 versions) + optional cover letter + screening question answers
Track Applications: Dashboard showing all applications, status (viewed/not viewed), employer contact info
Jobs marked "Easy Apply" stay on platform; others redirect to external ATS. System auto-fills from profile/resume; application confirmation email sent immediately.
4. PROFESSIONAL SERVICES MARKETPLACE (UI Design + Trust System)
Designed seller/buyer flows:
Service Listings: Freelancers create profiles showcasing skills, portfolio, reviews, hourly rates
Browse & Search: Filter by service type, location, rating, price
Quick Offer: Buyers propose price directly in chat ("Propose $X" button)
Rating System: Post-transaction (2 days after 4+ messages exchanged), buyer rates seller 1-5 with comment; both parties see feedback
Repeat Violations: AI flags policy-breaking listings (weapons, counterfeit, restricted animals); flagged posts hidden pending human review
5. REAL-TIME MESSAGING WITH RATE LIMITS (Messaging Design + Growth Design)
Designed role-based messaging access:
Free Users: 3 "intro messages"/month to non-connections; unlimited once recipient replies
Premium User/Business Standard: 10 initiation messages/month to non-connections; unlimited once they reply
Business Premium: 30 messages/month; unlimited after reply
Connections: Always message each other freely (1st-degree + group members)
Rate Limiting: Excessive messaging (100+ messages/hour) triggers spam detection → temporary account restriction (24h)
Message history shows "Remaining: 7/10 this month" and offers $5 add-on purchases.
