FlowBeam is a mobile app concept I designed over 4 weeks to help remote workers and students stay focused while maintaining calm and balance.
The idea came from observing how most productivity apps feel stressful — filled with timers, streaks, and pressure — instead of helping people find focus peacefully.
My goal was to create a simple, mindful experience that supports concentration through mood-based focus sessions, ambient sounds, and subtle visual feedback.

Process
Researching user behaviours
I started with a short user survey and a few interviews with remote workers.
Most said they wanted a focus app that didn’t feel like a stopwatch.
They valued calm visuals, flexibility, and mood awareness.
I also looked at existing apps like Forest, Headspace, and Pomofocus — identifying that FlowBeam could stand out by combining structure (like Pomodoro) with emotional design (like Calm).
Defining the Experience
From the research, I built one guiding principle:
“Help users work with calm focus, not competitive focus.”
I mapped a simple flow:
Choose a focus mode (Work / Study / Calm).
Pick a theme and soundscape.
Start the focus timer with a breathing cue.
End with a short reflection card (“How did that feel?”).
Design
The design direction was minimal, soft, and grounded.
Color palette: muted greens (#4AFF3A), ivory, yellow (#FFD700) (and lavender to signal calm.
Typography: Inter + Nunito Sans for readability.
UI: circular breathing animation, rounded buttons, and gentle shadows.
I wanted the app to feel like a friend reminding you to breathe — not a boss reminding you to perform.
Prototype & Testing
I built a functional prototype in Figma and shared it with five testers through Maze.
Each was asked to start a focus session and end it with a reflection.
Results:
4 out of 5 completed tasks smoothly.
Most praised the layout and color mood.
One user wanted faster setup — I later merged setup steps into one screen.
Outcome
The final design balanced structure and calmness.
It allowed users to set focused sessions, enjoy ambient visuals, and reflect afterward — all without anxiety or clutter.
Key Results:
80% task success in usability testing
4.6/5 satisfaction for “ease of focus setup”
Improved flow after combining mood and sound settings
What I learned:
Designing for focus isn’t about productivity metrics — it’s about crafting emotional comfort through simplicity.
