Volt: Designing an AI Strength Coach That Feels Human

Overview

Volt is a concept for an AI-powered strength training product. It reads how you slept, how sore you are and how your week looks, then adjusts each workout to match. I designed the marketing site, pricing page, onboarding flow and core app screens, with the aim of making an adaptive product feel clear, trustworthy and motivating.

The Challenge

Most fitness apps give you a fixed plan and leave you to deal with real life. When a session gets missed or a bad night’s sleep gets in the way, the plan keeps going as if nothing happened. People fall behind, feel like they’ve failed and quit.
AI coaching promises to fix this, but it brings its own problem. When an app silently rewrites your workout, it can feel arbitrary, and people don’t follow advice they don’t understand. The design challenge was to make adaptation feel helpful and transparent instead of mysterious.

Goals

Build trust. Every automatic change should be explainable in one plain sentence.
Lower the barrier to starting. Getting from opening the app to the first set should take as few taps as possible.
Stay legible anywhere. Screens should be readable in bright gyms, at arm’s length and mid-workout.

Research and Insights

I began by reviewing popular fitness and coaching apps and reading about why people abandon training programs. Three patterns stood out and shaped the whole design.
Rigid plans break. A fixed program assumes a perfect week. When life interrupts, the gap between the plan and reality makes people feel behind, and feeling behind is a common reason they stop.
AI feels like a black box. Recommendations that arrive without reasons are easy to ignore. Explaining why a plan changed does more for trust than making the algorithm smarter.
Attention is short. Between sets, people glance at their phone for a few seconds. Anything that takes more than a glance to understand is a problem in the middle of a workout.

PRICING LAYOUT

Design Principles

These insights became three principles that every screen was checked against.
Lead with today. Show one workout and one action before anything else.
Explain every change. Pair each adaptation with a short, human coach note.
Design for the gym floor. Use high contrast, large touch targets and one bright accent that works in harsh light.

Process

Discover. I reviewed competing products and mapped the moments where adaptive coaching feels unclear or out of the user’s control.
Define. I turned those moments into the three principles above and a short, five-step core flow: onboarding, today’s plan, workout, progress summary and plan update.
Design. I built a high-contrast visual system and designed key screens for mobile and desktop together, so the product story stayed consistent across both.
Refine. I simplified layouts, increased tap target sizes and tightened the copy until every screen could be understood at a glance.

User Flow

The core journey is deliberately short:
Onboarding goal → Today’s plan → Workout → Progress summary → Plan adapts
Each step either sets up the plan or feeds the next adaptation. This keeps the loop clear: the more you train, the better the next session fits you.

Visual System

Color. A near-black background keeps the interface quiet and makes content stand out. A single electric lime accent marks the primary action and positive progress, and it appears nowhere else. Steel gray handles secondary text, and chalk white handles headlines.

Outcome

Volt shows how an AI product can feel approachable. The design leads with one clear action, explains its own decisions and keeps a single strong visual identity from the marketing site down to the in-app screens. The result is a cohesive system that works across desktop and mobile and can scale to new features without losing clarity.
