Music:
An Art Form
Throughout the course of history, art has presented
itself as an entity that gives an individual or an entire community an
identity, one that is unique in the world. While it has rules or, should I say,
guidelines, it is not confined to these things. We can also say, art is one of
those things which is constantly breaking the rules; breaking new ground;
pioneering new techniques and methods; it’s something that one, as an artist,
must break these guidelines to find something new.
Art is a mystery still constantly being unfolded
everyday. There is mystery in the very deepest roots of art, and there is also
mystery in the ever blooming leaves of this thing. It is simply not possible to
fully unravel art.
Music:
Now how can we see music as part of this great
whole? Using my short description of art mentioned above as a foundation to
elaborate on music as a form of art. Music gives each culture an identity. The
simplest and most drastic of examples can be found between Eastern and Western
classical music; the traditional, natural sounding instruments of Eastern
(Asian) music and the refined sound of Western violins and orchestras. While
the differences are large.
One thing is for sure. Music is something that comes
from the heart. Just as any other art form. It is something that arises from a
place where the human mind can’t go to. Passing through our emotions and being
saturated and filtered by them. Before ever being able to be translated into
notes and tunes.
It comes from a place of common ground – the human
soul. A place where every man, woman, regardless of his/her ethnicity or race
is rendered equal. That may be the reason why music is so moving and appealing
to people and may be why music is always understood ‘universally’. The same can
be said for the whole concept of art.
Music is also a mystery still yet to be fully
discovered and uncovered. It is quite amazing to think that there are only 12
notes in the whole conventional musical spectrum but yet there has never been a
song that is identical to another. There could be similarities, but never in a
thousand years has there been a song where it exactly resembles the way another
song sounds like.
Taking this into consideration, it is crazy to think
that different people, musicians, composers, etc. still come up with new lines
of music; lines never before heard and possibly, never to be heard again.
It is this deep nature of music that continually
mesmerizes me each time I touch my instrument. The thought of playing something
that I alone would be able to play and express is something that I truly am
proud and thankful for.
And it’s in everyone’s duty to feel that way.
What you and I have is a gift. One that we shouldn’t
let go to waste. Music as any other art form has great, untapped powered to
change the very fabric of reality and of the world. And it’s in us, the
wielders of this great force, that we have this power to make a change with our
creativity. It’s in us to strive forward to continuously better ourselves in
humility and hard work. And also to pass on this great knowledge to others.
