Gen Z is a generation of "digital natives" who have never known a world without the internet. Life for this generation is driven by the need to be constantly online and connected. But even then; even in such a hyper-connected world, the people are more inclined to communicating through online streams, such as Whatsapp, Facebook, Instagram, and so on. This also leads to matter of patience, where the speed at which things are completed in social media is so fast that Gen Z, according to a study, has resulted in the lowest attention spans in the history of mankind.
While this shows the incredible rate of the development of science and technology, but in matters between humans, a more "primitive" method would be more suitable; a method that the majority of the current generation has neglected for quite a long time.
Face-to-face communication.
What exactly are the benefits of this mode? How is it better in any way than the hyper-connected and hyper-fast forms of online communication?
Here are the top 4 benefits of face-to-face conversation:
It cultivates and establishes TRUST - Trust is something that can only be earned and established by true face-to-face contact between two individuals. The presence of a listener assures the talker that his/her dialogue is heard and increases the chances of developing a stronger sense of trust, as opposed to an online mode of communication, an example may be, through text, where both parties can't even see each other.
It increases the probability if resolving conflicts - Similar to the point above, face-to-face conversation brings both individuals in an environment where it would be hard to hide any hidden grudge or emotion against the other. This leads to a better chance of coming to an agreement and establishing trust.
Shows body language - Another important aspect of this mode of conversation. It shows body language. According to a research study, about 80-90% of human communication consists of body language or body movement. A person's body language reveals a lot about their current state of mind - nervous, sad, excitement, etc.. And thus, one cannot hide his/her intentions and motives.
Builds relationships - A face-to-face conversation between two people connects them emotionally and thus, forges a relationship in between them. This is highly important as relations are vital for human survival and people who have healthy relations with friends and families are more likely to have a more optimistic point of view of life, than those who tend to be shy, quiet, and stubborn.
In a world where 26% of youth prefer and isolated form of communication, through the safety and comfort of their screens, it is to be highly noted of the importance of a natural way of communication. Since, humans are social beings, it would be unhealthy for us to maintain such a lifestyle of isolation.
Go out. Make friends. Put your phone down. Talk to people in full sentences. Listen to them, here stories and make memories.
