Born in Houston, Texas, on September 14, 1989, Butler’s childhood proved to be a significant challenge and, as stated prior, his journey to the NBA didn't lack its fair share of obstacles. Jimmy Butler's childhood was characterized by poverty, abandonment, and homelessness. He was born to a 16-year-old single mother, and his father abandoned the family when he was merely an infant. To make matters worse, Butler’s mother kicked him out of the house when he was only 13 because of his various immature antics, harshly claiming that she “didn’t like the look of him” before forcing him out of his own home. Troubled and hurt by his own mother’s decision, Jimmy moved in with a friend, and this began a new chapter in his life; a chapter characterized by grit and hard work, which would later become staple characteristics throughout his career. His friend’s mother, Mrs. Jordan, became a new mother figure for him and the other boys she selflessly sheltered. She provided them with a home, food, and most importantly, a lot of care and love. Jordan also persuaded Butler to switch from football to basketball, which Butler was hesitant about at first, but this soon turned out to be a life-changing decision.
