Problem statement

Feature ideas that can facilitate a majority of the community-learning activities on the learner dashboard itself for Airtribe and increase the completion rates of the courses.

Why CBC’s?

Shortly before 2010, the newest revolutionary educational tool was the MOOC (mass online open course). This allowed anyone in the world to take free courses online and to set their own pace for going through the class.
Over time, the limitations and downsides of MOOC(Massive learning online courses) learning have become apparent and recent data has shown declining enrollment and low completion rates for these types of courses. 3-7% is the completion rate for MOOCs. To adapt, educational platforms have begun to offer students a more immersive experience known as cohort-based learning.
But Why CBC’S?
Increased accountability
specific course materials - not appealing to the masses
Applied Learning
community building and support
soft skills development
💡 CBC’s is the future of learning!

Understanding the brief - Problem discovery

What does User Engagement mean for Airtribe?
Who is a Learner? - who purchases a course and has access to the dashboard - since currently, it’s an invite-only access to the dashboard.
Problem discovery 01 - If engagement is defined as a number of people just coming on the platform - discovery is what we solve for.
Problem discovery 02 - If engagement is defined as learners staying on the dashboard during the cohort - making the platform more interactive and hence increasing the engagement - more critical (after talking to Airtribe)

What are we designing?

Features for Airtribe(CBC conducting platform) which keep the user more engaged and make learning more interactive and fun.
Primary aim -
drive more engagement
Reduces friction of moving from one app to the other
Increasing the number of learners per quarter

Understanding Engagement

What is user engagement?
Why is user engagement important?
Where is user engagement happening on the internet? and How?
Is having good engagement only for a good experience or is there something else that I'm not able to see? What exactly does airtribe get out of good engagement?
Good engagement usually results in good retention and completion as well. We care about the learner experience and want the learners to make the most out of our programs. Cohort-based courses are supposed to work better than other courses and community play a huge role there.
NPS, CSAT - to measure the engagement
Why do we need good engagement?
Same as above. It helps us improve the completion rate, course NPS, and learner retention.
Is 10k designers (for now) the gold standard of good engagement?
On community (Discord) - Yes. During live sessions and projects - We have other courses where the engagement and involvement from mentors is much more.
How do you measure good engagement? Is it better completion rates? What else?
Engagement in the community, engagement in different pods, course NPS, completion rates
How much of the feature selection can be controlled by a cohort-runner? Can airtribe intervene? How much?
With our new model, we have a lot more control over the course experience. You can assume that we have full control over course experience in 80% of our courses.

Who is the user?

User base is basically divided in 2 parts
Upskilling courses - already have a job - early to mid-20s
transition courses - beginner friendly - fairly young audience

Journey of a current user

Get the invite
fill the introduction and profile section
join the discord server/ slack

User interviews

I interviewed 12 users from different cohorts in the span of 3 days.

Research questions

How are you? have you had lunch or dinner?
How was your day?
How many cohorts have been a part of?
what tools do you use there?
How do other cohorts work? Are there pods in other cohorts too?
How was your cohort experience? why?
How active were you in the cohort - super-active/active/mildly active/ inactive?
Where were you the most active? In discord vc/in-text channel / in DMS?
Do you keep any channels muted? or what channel do you use the most?
what do you like the most about discord?
What made you feel most involved in the cohort?
Did you at any point feel moving to discord/zoom was a hassle?
What were your touchpoints with Airtribe during the cohort - when did you use it the most?
How often do you interact with your mentors? and mode of communication?
In the other courses that you’ve done, what made you feel more engrossed in the course?
What was the most boring/ difficult task throughout the cohort other than the assignment?
User Interview findings

Airtribe as a platform

Airtribe - Intermediary step for almost everything currently
💡 Now for every feature we can ask - Do we want to act as an aggregator here?
Since acting as an aggregator also brings some engagement.
If Yes - how to do it more? - also means engagement
If No - how to solve for it?

Leaderboard is a great concept and a good attempt for gamification, through research I found out

New Features

Solution Features

Leaderboard
💡 Every Reward needs a Reward
Rewards for rewards (Leaderboard)
Also one of the things that can give more credibility is giving xps to more meaningful actions like -
Activity/ Weekly Leaderboard/ overall leaderboard
Introduction - can be on less priority
Introduction is the first step towards building anything like a community.
Video playback experience
During the cohort users had to go back and play every video.
Playlist play video experience - like youtube
Quizes after every per-recorded session - give points to that - when getting low marks offer suggestions on resources
Although Airtribe wanted to get out of netflix mode but that’s the mental model and honestly an expectation
Notes
Taking notes while watching a lecture
Linking their notion/google docs/evernote - so that all their notes at one place
Add media in notes
Start-stop recording of interesting/value-able information and adding that to their notes
Representing of the most replayed parts of the video
share-ability for notes - private and public - points for making it public
Community
Notice board - for all the updates
Insights on the platform itself
Voice channels
Text channel
Communication for pod on the platform itself - in the groups that already exists
Say hii to this person based on the interests/ nudge - DMs
Assignments
Shifting peer feedback in the upper side after submission- currently we have too many steps to go and give peer feedback

Trending assignments / Or pinning good assignments from cohort runner - need feedback
Having an App for Airtribe
If had to give a priority then - Web first because it’s a learning software - mostly happens on desktops
Make airtribe an app - very rarely people go to google, search for something and then talk/engage in a community. It’s an extra step and adds friction
Notifications are also a very important feature, can only be done with an app - nudges the user for important things
But I also understand it’ll take a lot of bandwidth, time, money and effort to do so.
Referral on the cohort-runner’s side and incentive for that.
