The year 2020 was a bang of a hit globally as it affected the economy but paved the way for the development of the video gaming industry. After the official release of the most anticipated PlayStation 5 and the Xbox Series X in late 2020, gamers across the globe have been scratching their fingers for an exciting gaming experience. From Cyberpunk 2077 to FIFA 21 and plenty more in between, however, there are ten games that top our exhaustive list. Below are the top ten most anticipated games of the year.
CYBERPUNK 2077:
From what we’ve seen, Cyberpunk 2077 has sort of a futuristic Grand Theft Auto experience, with body modifications and incredible-looking graphics. The surprise addition of John Wick's Keanu Reeves as a main character only sweetens the gaming experience.
SPIDER-MAN:
In this game, Miles Morales exhausts the spotlight with his standalone side story for the PS5. It’s an improper sequel to Insomniac’s Spider-Man, but it's said to be more like UnchartedLost Legacy in scope. After the excitement of Into the Spider-Verse, we should be looking forward to swinging around Manhattan with Miles thanks to Sony’s promises of teaming up with Marvel for a new Spider-Man game.
However, the disappointment of Marvel’s Avengers game, also developed by Square Enix and published by Sony, serves as a cautionary tale for fans expecting a flawless superhero gaming experience. Also, all technical improvements for the global superhero experience are valued by PS5.
FIFA 21:
FIFA 21 gameplay is one of the most popular across the globe, especially in the African gaming community. It's no surprise that it doesn’t sound like the most feature-packed upgrade, at least on paper. The game is also supposed to get more creative on the pitch with new attacking options, while a more in-depth career mode and an expanded Volta Football mode sound intriguing. However, the version accommodates a PS5 upgrade for free.
Assassin's Creed Valhalla
This is an action role-playing game that was developed in Montreal and published by Ubisoft. Valhalla exists on the foundation of a very distinctive-looking tone. According to the storyline, along with what reflects a more “hand-crafted” world and the ability to make use of nearly any weapon in the game, players take on the role of Eivor, a Viking warrior who must navigate through the political turmoil of 9th-century England.
The game also features a unique combat system where players can switch between two weapons on the fly and use special abilities to defeat enemies. With its immersive open-world environment and engaging storyline, Valhalla has quickly become a fan favourite in the action RPG genre.
Watch Dogs: Legacy
This game jumps across the pond, as Ubisoft’s latest open-world game looks to take on a post-Brexit dictatorial regime in London. This time around, the game comes with the omniscient control ability of anyone wandering around the city, including an aged hacker.
Players will be able to recruit anyone they come across in the game, building a team of resistance fighters with unique abilities and backgrounds. The game’s setting is a near-future London where a corrupt government has taken control and turned the city into a surveillance state. The player’s goal is to take down the regime and restore freedom to the people.
CALL OF DUTY: BLACK OPS-COLD WAR
This is a first-person shooter game developed by Treyarch and Raven Software and published by Activision. However, not all first-person shooter games developed by Activision have been successful, with the 2019 release of “Call of Duty: Modern Warfare” receiving mixed reviews and criticism for its single-player campaign. Additionally, some players have criticized the company’s use of microtransactions and loot boxes in their games. It is the seventeenth instalment in the overall COD series, and the infamous COVID-19 could not delay its release. Black Ops has been the most consistent sub-brand in the latest series, so fans have high hopes that this will be another interesting entry. As the campaign trailer reflected earlier this year, the game takes us back to 1980 with a recreation of Ronald Reagan telling us to do whatever is necessary.
THE LAST OF US, PART 2 (Naughty Dog)
The Lou is a dark, brutal meditation on violence and power in a post-apocalyptic landscape. It’s been played as an older Ellie, the younger companion from the first game, sent on a roaring rampage of revenge after the death of her lover. So, the questions are:
Will this game have something intelligent or interesting to say about this violence, or will it just be a festival of nastiness?
Will Ellie’s homosexuality be used as an excuse for violence?
However, these questions are not clear, but with Naughty Dog at the helm, they are bound to be compelling.
DEMON’S SOULS
Bluepoint Games is behind this beautiful-looking upgrade that keeps the heart of the original game while giving it the kind of modern features that have been anticipated.
Originally on PS3, Demon’s Souls set the template for Dark Souls, Bloodborne, and many others, creating the innovative Souls-like genre. At the moment, one is able to experience its brutal challenge all over again on the new PlayStation 5.
STARWARS: SQUADRONS
Although we haven’t played it yet, we’re curious to see how the dogfighting game plays. In the Middle of the Stars is a 5v5 vehicular shooter with both a single-player story and free online multiplayer. Additionally, it is said to have a smaller scope than the aforementioned video games.
DIRT 5
Over the years, the Dirt franchise has never let fans down, but this consistency has not yet become monotonous. The same can be expected from Dirt 5, which was released simultaneously on PCs, Xbox Series X, PlayStation 5, and PlayStation 4. With its career mode and four-player split screen, it is great as expected, and the evening seems so crazy and freaking amazing, right?
