Shopify Custom Bundle & Subscription System for Dog Products

Most pet subscription services treat all dogs the same. that doesn't work when you've got Chihuahuas and Great Danes in your customer base. This client needed something smarter

Built a custom Shopify system where customers select their dog's weight range, and the shop automatically shows the right product bundles for that size. Small dogs get smaller portions, large dogs get bigger ones—pricing adjusts automatically

The subscription piece ties into this seamlessly. Once someone picks their bundle based on weight, they can set up recurring monthly deliveries. No need to remember to reorder, it just shows up. The system handles the complexity behind the scenes while keeping the customer experience simple.

Added custom bundle functionality where customers can mix and match products within their weight tier. Want more treats and less kibble? Fine. Different flavor preferences? Easy. The bundles are flexible but stay within the parameters that make sense for the dog's size.

Free gift logic was interesting to build—certain subscription tiers or order values automatically include bonus items. The system adds them to the cart without the customer needing to select anything, and it shows clearly in checkout what they're getting as a reward.

Also created predefined bundles for customers who don't want to customize. These are curated combinations that work well together, priced slightly better than buying individually, giving people options whether they want control or simplicity.

The whole checkout flow is clean. Customer sees their bundle, understands their subscription frequency, knows when the next shipment arrives, and can manage everything from their account dashboard. No confusion, no hidden complexity.

Tested the subscription management extensively—customers can pause, skip deliveries, change frequency, update payment methods, all without needing support help. The fewer emails to customer service, the better the system works.

Performance was important too. This runs on standard Shopify without custom apps that slow everything down. Used native Shopify capabilities where possible, custom code only where necessary. Site loads fast, checkout is smooth, no janky user experience.
