Mvule - African Library App (UI/UX Design)

Eliza Kinuthia

Mvule is more than a library - it is a living archive of Africa's story. Spanning generations and genres; from timeless folktales to contemporary voices, it gathers stories from across the continent, reflecting the depth and dynamism of African identity.
In a world moving swiftly forward, Mvule offers a space to pause, reflect, and reconnect โ€” empowering Africans today to explore where they come from, understand who they are, and imagine what they can become.
Design Objective
The Mvule interface was crafted to evoke a sense of cultural pride and discovery while maintaining intuitive usability. The goal was to create a platform that feels both modern and rooted in African heritage.
Visual Language
Mvuleโ€™s visual design blends earthy tones reminiscent of traditional African textiles and landscapes. The landing page evokes the warmth and intimacy of storytelling beneath a Mvule tree; a familiar scene in many African communities.
Navigation & Layout
A clean, card-based layout organizes books recommended to the user, based on their chosen tastes and activity. The home screen highlights recommended, recently added titles, and user-curated collections. Bottom navigation provides quick access to:
Home (Recommendations & Recent additions)
Explore (Search functionality)
Library (Current reads & Saved books)
Settings (Preferences, Account & Privacy)
Typography & Readability
