📝 Project Description

green guide is a mock-up for an app-based software tool developed to connect users with quality information, community resources, recycling locations, and identifying eligible or incompatible materials to help people quickly and easily identify what to recycle, where to recycle, and how to recycle.

Recycling is the process of collecting and processing materials that would otherwise be thrown away as trash and turning them into new products. It is beneficial, sustainable, and cost-saving for you, your community, and the environment.

The goal of the green guide recycling app is to make the process of finding and participating in recycling practices easier by delivering a user-friendly, easy-to-understand interface to local and traveling people looking for more sustainable ways to help heal the planet and support climate change causes through shared resources.

📱🪄Branding

green guide branding

Meaning behind the icons:

  • Effective information (cell phone icon) to teach them the basics, intermediate, and advanced ways of recycling.
  • Practical resources (light bulb icon) to utilize the app and community knowledge of recycling opportunities.
  • Connecting locations for recycling (bottle icon) essential materials like plastics, glass, aluminum and more.
  • Shareable materials that are either eligible or incompatible for recycling or reusable methods (shirt icon) for sustainable living.

These features will be used to benefit the recycling efforts in the user’s individual communities and beyond as we work to fight climate change, supply chain issues, environmental damage, and more.

For the green guide, we wanted an approachable, user-friendly app. By using s sans-serif font (Rucksack) and by using lowercase fonts, we wanted to create a feeling of friendliness and have a welcoming environment to all.

💻✨UX/UI Design

Currently, the Green Guide app is designed with four main features: a photo scanning tool, a map of recycling centers, a tutorial for using the app, and recycling resource pages.

The homepage contains the camera tool where users can take a picture of the object they want to recycle. The app then scans the photo to identify the object's material, such as #5 plastic, and displays the corresponding resource page which tells the user if and how the material can be recycled. This page also contains information such as the recycling schedule for the user's nearest recycling location.

The map icon leads to the map page, where the user can see recycling centers in their area marked with pins on the map. The help icon leads to the tutorial page, which walks users through the process of using the app entirely.
