Overview:

DesignMod is a mobile app designed to break down barriers in the world of interior and exterior design. It leverages AI to provide personalized design suggestions, enabling users to envision and transform their spaces without needing professional expertise.

My Role: UX Designer

The Challenge:

Create an app that is:
Accessible: Usable by anyone, regardless of design knowledge.
Inspiring: Offers a wealth of design ideas and styles.
Personalized: Delivers tailored suggestions based on user preferences and existing spaces.
Actionable: Enables users to save, share, and implement designs.

User Research:

Interviews: Conducted interviews with homeowners and renters to understand their design challenges, goals, and pain points.
Surveys: Gathered data on design preferences, budgets, and technology usage.
Competitive Analysis: Evaluated existing design apps to identify gaps in the market and areas for innovation.

Key Findings:

Users felt overwhelmed by the design process and lacked confidence in their choices.
They craved inspiration but struggled to find personalized suggestions.
The cost of professional design services was a significant barrier.

Design Solutions:

Guided User Flow: A simple, linear flow guides users through the design process:
Home: Explore design ideas and access saved designs.
Generate: Upload an image, select a room, and choose a style.
Results: View AI-generated designs, compare before/after, and take action.
Intuitive Interface:
Clear labeling and icons facilitate navigation.
Image-centric design prioritizes visual inspiration.
Interactive elements (toggles, sliders, buttons) encourage exploration.
Personalization:
Style selection allows users to express their preferences.
Room-specific filters focus design suggestions.
The AI algorithm adapts to user choices over time.
Empowerment:
Users can save and share their designs.
They can regenerate designs with different styles.
The “watermark toggle” offers flexibility.
Frictionless Payment:
A clear value proposition (remove watermarks, access all styles) justifies the subscription model.
Multiple pricing options cater to different budgets.

User Testing:

We conducted usability testing throughout the design process. Key insights included:
Users loved the simplicity and visual appeal of the app.
The “before/after” comparison was a standout feature.
Some users initially missed the watermark toggle.
We iterated on the design based on feedback, making the toggle more prominent.

Impact & Future Considerations:

DesignMod has the potential to democratize interior and exterior design by making it accessible and affordable for everyone. Future iterations could include:
Integration with e-commerce platforms to facilitate product purchases.
Augmented reality features to visualize designs in real-world spaces.
Collaboration tools to involve friends and family in the design process.

Conclusion:

DesignMod is not just an app; it's a tool for self-expression and empowerment. By blending AI technology with user-centered design, we've created an experience that is both inspiring and accessible.
