Real-Time Waste Management Mobile App

Waste mismanagement is a critical issue in Nigeria, contributing to environmental pollution, health risks, and inefficient recycling. While traditional waste systems rely on manual scheduling and limited public engagement, a mobile solution offers the advantage of real-time communication, accountability, and accessibility for both residents and businesses.

Through user interviews and contextual research, we identified core challenges that contribute to poor waste disposal habits and inefficiencies in urban environments:

72% of residential users struggled to keep track of collection schedules, leading to frequent missed pickups and waste pile-ups.

Business owners reported frustration with inconsistent service, poor tracking tools, and difficulty ensuring compliance with local regulations.

Waste management personnel faced inefficiencies caused by outdated routing and reporting systems.

Users across all groups expressed the need for clear communication, real-time updates, and accountability in the waste collection process.

Key Insights (High-Need Users) Insights were focused on users with repeated issues related to waste tracking, service reliability, or lack of access to recycling education.

We hypothesized that a mobile app offering real-time waste collection schedules, simple recycling guidance, and issue reporting features would help users stay informed, improve recycling habits, and encourage more responsible waste disposal behavior across urban communities.

Recycling Education Hub Offers quick, digestible tips on how to sort and dispose of various types of waste. Interactive guides and visual references improve long-term recycling habits.

Smart Issue Reporting Allows users to report waste-related problems (e.g., missed collections, illegal dumping) with geotagged photos and descriptions, streamlining communication with municipal services.

Incentives for Responsible Behavior A built-in rewards system encourages consistent recycling and proper disposal by offering points that can be redeemed for eco-friendly perks.

Wireframes & User Flow

Outlined the full user journey for different user types—residents, businesses, and waste collection personnel. Focused on simplifying key actions like checking schedules, reporting issues, and learning about recycling.

MVP Development

Developed a high-fidelity mobile prototype using Figma, prioritizing essential features such as real-time notifications, waste tracking, and reporting tools. Conducted usability tests with students and office workers to refine flows and improve overall accessibility.

After testing with 100 students and office workers, users reported increased awareness of waste collection schedules, improved recycling habits, and greater satisfaction with issue reporting features. Feedback data showed:

Reflection

Green link reinforced the power of inclusive design in tackling real-world problems. By centering the experience around users’ everyday needs and pain points, we were able to create a tool that didn’t just streamline waste management, it changed behavior. Future versions aim to incorporate AI-powered route optimization, personalized recycling goals, and integration with local government systems for broader impact.
