The traditional Dutch Barn Reimagined
The Dutch Barn is a historical typology of the "New World" barns existing since the 18th century. These were the first great barns built in the United States, mostly by Dutch settlers. My client had a piece of land in Upstate New York State and we worked a concept to design a two wing (separated between living and sleeping) modern barn style inspired home with an attic. The form of these modern barns was heavily influenced by the historical Dutch Barn with a contemporary interpretation. For the living wing, the client's request was to have a smaller living room but a bigger work office both fronted by large windows. The space also has an attic that covers half the size of the wing. The attic is designed as a semi-living room with a meditation/exercise area. The bedroom wing has the master bedroom and another double bedroom in the ground floor, and another two bedrooms in the top floor, which is also designed as an attic space. The two wings are separated with a semi closed glassy area, which serves as an intermediate room between the living wing and the sleeping wing.
