Famskey: concept design for booking software for small service businesses

Famskey is a concept design, not client work. It is booking software for small service businesses like salons, carpenters, coaching centres, caterers and domestic workers, and we did the research, UX and UI over four weeks.
Type: Concept design · Industry: SaaS, booking and scheduling · What we did: Research, UX and UI design · Tools: Sketch, InVision · Timeline: 4 weeks

About the concept

There is no client behind Famskey. It is a self-initiated product concept that runs the full process, from research and personas to a design system and final screens. Nothing was built or sold.

The challenge

Small service businesses run bookings on calls, chats and paper.
The weekend rush. Customers all arrive at once, and staff are hard to assign.
Long waits. Customers left waiting hurt the business’s reputation.
No single view. Owners had no one place to see bookings, staff and clients.

What we did

Started with research

Ran a competitive analysis of existing booking tools.
Wrote a persona: Virginia George, a salon owner. Her goal is to protect her reputation; her frustration is customers waiting at weekends.
Mapped the information architecture for the whole product.

Mapped the product before drawing it

Did a task analysis and user flows for booking, rescheduling and staff assignment.
Drew a product map with five areas: Dashboard, Staff, Calendar, Clients and Services, with every sub-page under them.
Sketched wireframes before any visual design.

Built a design system

Set a type scale, colours and components, so every screen stays consistent.
Used one blue for main actions and dark text for secondary ones, so the next step is always clear.

Designed the core screens

An overview dashboard with sales, cancellations and upcoming appointments at a glance.
A calendar that shows each staff member’s day, with a booking card for service, client and price.
Staff management: working hours, shifts, time off and each person’s bookings.
Client management: client list, profiles, invoices and past appointments.

Scope

Included:
Research: competitive analysis, information architecture and a user persona.
Planning: task analysis, user flows, a product map, wireframes and sketches.
Visual design: a design system, UI screens for the dashboard, calendar, staff and clients, and interactions.
Not included:
A client. This was a self-initiated concept.
Development. No working product or code was built.
Usability and A/B testing. We listed both as work we would like to do next.

Results

Done in four weeks. Week 1: competitive analysis, personas and information architecture. Week 2: task analysis, user flows and prototyping. Weeks 3 and 4: wireframes, design system, UI design and interactions.
A full set of core screens: dashboard, calendar, staff and clients.
There are no usage numbers, because this is a concept, not a live product.

What we’d improve next

Test with real owners. Run usability tests with salon and tutoring business owners on the booking and staff screens.
Add a client booking page. Let customers pick a service and a free slot online, so the weekend rush spreads across the week.
Add appointment reminders. Send clients a reminder by text or message before each booking.

Working on something similar?

I design websites in Figma and build them in Framer or Webflow, so your team can edit every page without a developer. Message me here on Contra with your site or Figma file, and I’ll reply with a plan and a fixed price.
