Overview

The color grading process for 'Summer Fields,' a personal project aimed at exploring and demonstrating the aesthetic qualities of film emulation in a digital workflow. The primary objective was to achieve a cinematic look reminiscent of classic film stocks, specifically Kodak 250D, using DaVinci Resolve.

Challenges and Solutions

One of the main challenges in this project was accurately emulating the Kodak 250D film stock without relying on third-party plugins. This required a deep understanding of color science, film grain, and the specific characteristics of the Kodak 250D emulsion. The solution involved a meticulous process of analyzing reference footage shot on Kodak 250D and then manually recreating its unique color response, highlight rolloff, and shadow detail within DaVinci Resolve.
This was achieved through a combination of
Custom LUTs (Look-Up Tables),
Power grades, and careful manipulation of color wheels, curves, and qualifiers.
Another challenge was maintaining consistency across various shots, given the natural variations in lighting and composition inherent in a personal project. To address this, a robust node tree structure was developed in DaVinci Resolve, allowing for global adjustments while providing granular control over specific areas of each shot. This ensured a cohesive look throughout the entire project.

Technical Approach

The color grading was performed entirely within Blackmagic Design DaVinci Resolve, a powerful and industry-standard color correction software. The workflow involved:
Footage Preparation: Initial steps included media management, color management, basic primary corrections (exposure, white balance), and noise reduction where necessary.
Film Emulation: The core of the project involved recreating the Kodak 250D look. This was an iterative process of comparing the digital footage to genuine Kodak 250D film scans and adjusting color, contrast, and saturation. Specific attention was paid to the unique color palette, subtle desaturation, and the way highlights and shadows are rendered by the film stock. Custom curves were extensively used to shape the tonal response.
Grain Management: To further enhance the filmic aesthetic, a subtle, organic film grain was added. This was carefully chosen and applied to avoid a digital or artificial appearance, mimicking the natural grain structure of Kodak 250D.
Shot Matching: Despite being a personal project, maintaining visual continuity was crucial. Advanced shot matching techniques were employed to ensure consistent color and luminance across all clips, even those with varying lighting conditions.
Final Delivery: The graded footage was rendered out in a high-quality format suitable for online platforms, ensuring the integrity of the color work was preserved.

RESULT

The successful implementation of the Kodak 250D film emulation transformed the digital Slog3 footage into a visually rich and emotionally resonant piece. The final look achieved a warm, organic, and timeless aesthetic, significantly enhancing the narrative and mood of the ‘Summer Fields’ project. The subtle color shifts, natural skin tones, and pleasing highlight rolloff characteristic of film were faithfully reproduced, demonstrating the power of meticulous color grading in elevating visual storytelling.

I am the colorist for this project. In this project we wanted to test the Kodak 250D film so we converted the digital video to film without any plugins.
