Free Duomo Concert Features Famed Child Vocalists

An internationally renowned German boys’ choir will give a free concert at the Duomo, the Cathedral of the Santa Maria del Fiore on Thursday, September 12 at starting at 9:15 pm.

Founded in 1956, Tölzer Knabenchor is an award-winning choir comprised of 28 boys based in Munich that presents more than 200 concerts a year and opera productions. The ensemble is returning to Florence scene after a 15 year absence thanks to 2019 edition “O Flos Colende” series.

Accompanied on the Duomo’s organ by Clemens Haudumcon and conducted by former choir member and acclaimed singer Christian Fliegner, Tölzer Knabenchor will offer visitors the experience of a specially designed program which includes the masterpieces of Mozart’s “Ave Maria, K. 554,” “Hallelujah, K. 553”, Mendelssohn’s “Three Motets, Op. 39,” and Rossini’s “Three Religious Choirs,” written after Rossini retired from the opera scene. Tölzer Knabenchor, known for clarity of sound and the ability to perform a wide range of music, will also perform lesser known composers Johann Michael Haydn (brother of Franz Joseph Haydn) and Giovanni Giorgi.

The closing piece of the evening is deeply connected to Florentine history of music and Florence’s Cathedral. In commemoration of Marco da Gagliano, who held the post of choirmaster of Santa Maria del Fiore during the 17th century, as well as at the Medici court and the San Lorenzo Basilica, the group will interpret two motets: Beatam me dicent and O beata Trinitas, which he wrote.
