3D Door Configurator Development for Smart

Role: Lead/front-end developer Duration: June–December 2020, revisited March 2021 (the site and 3D configurator remain live with minimal maintenance required). Outcome: Increased sales and engagement through interactive 3D configurator

 

SOS Design asked us to pitch and build a new website and 3D door configurator for Smart’s designer door range. The existing configurator used 2D images and SVGs. It was functional but visually outdated and not user-friendly.

Smart offers 50+ highly customisable doors and wanted a “best-in-class” digital showcase to highlight their bespoke options.

Introduced 3D approach, leveraging existing realistic 3D renders

Built configurator in Three.js, allowing selection of colours, hardware, and glazing

Connected configurator to an API for installer-ready designs

Integrated with a WordPress site, linking featured doors to the configurator for seamless navigation

Ensured full responsiveness and performance on desktop and mobile using Draco compression on 3D models

Scoped, prototyped, built, and shipped the project as sole developer

Collaborated with designer, 3D modeller, and product manager

150+ doors sold per month (pre-launch record: 82)

50,000+ unique visitors since June 2020 launch

100,000+ doors created via configurator within 18 months
