Research Assistant + Data Collection

Alora Paulsen Mulvey

About this Role

Funded by the University of Calgary and the Government of Canada, this multi-year research project traces digital feminist activism between 2016 and 2020. My role was to collect Instagram and TikTok data over the course of two years, track trends, and assist the lead investigator in analysing the content. Along with collecting social media data, I also tracked popular press publications on the feminists' activism and in the summer of 2020, conducted interviews with witches from across the United States to see how they used social media for activism, branding, and building independent businesses. We recruited participants through Instagram DMs and built relationships within the community to grow our sample.
So far, this project has produced one published academic article, a conference presentation, and a piece in The Conversation Canada. The Conversation is an independent publication that helps get scholarly research out of the academy and into the broader public. In the month it was published, our article was the most read piece authored by someone from our institution, with over 15k views.
