I served as the technical lead for implementing EU Digital Markets Act (DMA) compliance mechanisms across Prime Video storefront services—the systems that power browsing, search, watchlists, recently watched items, purchases, episode progress, and personalized recommendations.
Launched DMA regulatory compliance while maintaining high availability and no negative customer impact, across dozens of backend services supporting hundreds of millions of users.
My Role
Technical Lead for EU DMA compliance across Prime Video storefront services
Worked directly with Prime Video legal counsel and participated in discussions involving Amazon corporate-level legal
Collaborated with Senior Principal, Principal, and Senior Engineers across multiple Amazon organizations
Authored technical design documents and position papers to align engineering, legal, and program stakeholders
Key Challenges
Translating EU DMA requirements into technically feasible solutions within a large, existing production ecosystem
Designing approaches that could be consistently adopted across many independently owned storefront services
Handling regulatory enforcement and data-location concerns for customers traveling both inside and outside the EU
Launching compliance enforcement on mission-critical services with extreme availability requirements
What I Did
Proposed and evaluated multiple technical approaches to meet EU DMA requirements, balancing regulatory intent, feasibility, and operational risk
Partnered with legal counsel to translate regulatory language into concrete engineering constraints
Defined both short-term implementations to meet regulatory deadlines and longer-term architectures extensible to future global regulations
Led the launch of EU DMA enforcement across two tier-1 storefront services serving 200M+ customers at 99.9999% availability
Implemented a resilient solution on a key tier-1 service using fallback authentication tokens, ensuring Prime Video users could access their personal data even during outages of the primary token provider
Authored cross-team guidance to drive consistent implementation across dozens of backend services
Identified, root-caused, and helped resolve a critical memory leak in a shared Amazon library impacting 40+ services company-wide
Impact
Successfully launched EU DMA compliance with no customer-facing regressions across Prime Video’s core storefront experiences
Preserved uninterrupted access to customer data during upstream authentication outages
Established a scalable technical foundation for future regulatory compliance beyond the EU
Prevented ongoing resource degradation across dozens of Amazon services by resolving a high-impact shared-library issue
