Looking for something new to read but don't know what book to read. Here is a list of my recommendations that will end your quest of searching.
Ace of Spades by Faridah Àbíké-Íyímídé
Thriller, Mystery, LGBTQ+ literature
Welcome to Niveus Private Academy, where all that matters is money and the students being flawless until now. Anonymous texter Aces decides to bring two students' secrets out into the light. Talented musician Devon tries his best to throw himself into his rehearsals, but there is nothing he can do when his private photos become public. Head girl Chiamaka will stop at nothing to get what she wants, but soon everyone will know the price she has paid for power. Aces is out to get them both, seeing as he or she is someone who has all the Aces up their sleeves, and they are planning much more than a silly little high-school game.
This book left me speechless, which shows you how good of a book it is. I love books that deal with real-world issues. So, when I read Ace Of Spades, it immediately became my number one favourite book. This book deals with things people experience every day; racism, homophobia, bullying, classism, and colourism, which is a form of internalized racism.
This book shows that if something sounds too good to be true, it most likely is. The anticipation of figuring out who Aces is and what they are planning gives you an adrenaline rush. The plot twist left me even more speechless. I did not see it coming. The way the author wrote it was spectacular. I would give my life to be able to relive reading this book for the first time. That is the wholehearted truth.
They both die at the end by Adam Silvera
September 5th, just after midnight, Mateo Torrez and Rufus Emeterio receive a call along with some bad news. They’re going to die that day and there’s nothing they can do to stop it. Rufus and Mateo have never met each other, but on their final day they meet up using an app known as the Last Friend. Both of them want to enjoy one last big adventure. Their goal? To live a single lifetime in one day. This book was heartbreaking. The way the author showed how the characters dealt with their trauma as well as the reality of what is going to happen to them and how they accepted that, made this book good. This book shows that so much can happen in such little time and that we should never take the time we have with family and friends for granted. The First To Die At The End, the prequel to They Both Die At The End, is expected to be released on October 4th, 2022.
Dear Mrs Bird by AJ Pearce
Historical Fiction, War Story
London, 1941. Among the falling bombs. Emmeline Lake wants nothing but to become a fearless Lady War Correspondent. Instead, she ends up as a typist for the formidable Henrietta Bird, the renowned agony aunt for Woman’s Friend magazine. Letters with any form of unpleasantness, let alone those from the lovelorn, grief-stricken, or morally conflicted, are told to be tossed in the bin and never to be answered. Emmeline can’t handle the fact that the women’s questions go unanswered, so she decides to write back secretly in the hope that she can help the women to feel at peace.
Dear Mrs. Bird is a work of art and what made me fall more in love with historical fiction. This book shows the challenges the women had to face during the Second World War and how they suffered and struggled every day.
The reason I loved this book so much is because of how Emmy decides to go behind Mrs. Birds’ back and give the women advice and help them with whatever situation they are in. It teaches us that no matter how big, small or unpleasant the situation is, you can always ask someone for help. No situation is ever too dumb or minor to ask for advice.
This book deals with friendship, courage, and love and teaches us that although things might not work out the way you want them to, there’s always a way to make the most out of the situation and help the people around you.
Dear Mrs. Bird is the first of three books in The Emmy Lake Chronicles, with Yours Cheerfully being the sequel. The third and final book is still in its research phase and no release date has been announced.
I hope these recommendations will help you end your searching. So go get your cozy blankets ready and go read!
