This project focuses on creating a cinematic sci-fi environment using a modern USD-based workflow in Houdini Solaris. The primary goal was to explore: USD pipeline integration, Lighting and rendering using Karma, Efficient scene optimization for high-quality cinematic output. The layout is inspired by the dam sequence from The Creator, while the lighting approach blends natural sunset conditions with a stylized sci-fi cinematic look.
The lighting was designed to balance realism and cinematic appeal: Natural sunset lighting served as the base, Enhanced with subtle sci-fi contrast (warm highlights / cool shadows), Atmospheric depth and haze were used to emphasize scale. The goal was to achieve a grounded yet cinematic frame that feels both believable and visually striking.
Final Thoughts: This project marks my transition from a real-time workflow to a fully procedural pipeline using Houdini, with a focus on scalability, flexibility, and deeper control over the production process. It reinforced the importance of efficient asset pipelines, optimized rendering strategies, strong lighting direction and subtle compositing and grading.
