Introduction

Category: Personal project
Year: 2024
YMIR Dune is a 3D printed shoe made in partnership with Zellerfeld, utilizing their cutting edge 3D printing technology. It was released in June 2024 and is the first product from my brand YMIR.

Research

For me, storytelling is a big part of design. When I started designing Dune I asked myself ''what story do I want to tell with this shoe?''.
I decided to tell the story of starting my own brand and releasing my own shoe. It was an incredible feeling getting the opportunity, but also scary. Because I had never done anything like it before and stepping into the unknown is always a little uncomfortable.
When looking for a good representation of something beautiful, yet scary and daunting, the vision I got was the desert. More specifically sand dunes.

Design

The early versions of Dune took direct inspiration from sand dunes. The shoe consisted of lines with ''sharp' edges.
Then an update to Zellerfeld's technology meant the shoe could be made with 2 different textures. I wanted to utilize this, but had to change the design a bit as a result. The sharp edges got made into thicker, solidified lines, almost resembling a cage.
As a result, the shoe lost its direct inspiration from sand dunes, but all the key lines on the shoe stayed the same. After multiple revisions, turning out how it is today.

Development

The development process consists of lots of trial and error, and closely following the design guidelines to make sure the shoe is functional.
The base shoe was modeled in Gravity Sketch, while clean-up, additional details, and printing checks was done in Blender. From there I utilized Zellerfeld's auto check system to make sure the shoe was functional and ready for production.
