A case study on a babysitter hiring application
Nigeria has a babysitter problem
In Nigeria, it's a real hassle for busy parents to find reliable babysitters. I mean, there's just no good platform for it. And that's not just a small inconvenience—it's a big deal. Not having a reliable service makes life way more complicated for working parents. Plus, it's so stressful not knowing if your kid's in good hands.
And let's be real, who wants to bring a total stranger into their home? That just adds another layer of worry.
So, bottom line, we need a solid babysitter app here. Something that connect parents with trustworthy sitters who've been vetted and have experience.
Parent-centric insights
When it comes to creating a solution that truly hits the mark, understanding the users (parents) is important. To achieve this, I conducted interviews with parents aged between 24 and 50, aiming to gain deeper insights into their experiences and challenges related to finding qualified babysitters. The interviews gave me valuable insights into their world and what they really need.
I also conducted an online survey with parents across Nigeria, covering topics such as babysitting needs, payment preferences, and desired app features.

Based on the insights gathered from the interviews and surveys, I was able to identify the pain points experienced by users when trying to hire babysitters.
Safety Concerns: Ensuring the safety of their children is a top priority for parents. Parents worry about entrusting their children to strangers or individuals with inadequate training or experience in childcare.
Quality Assurance: Parents may struggle to assess the quality of potential babysitters, especially if they lack references or reviews. Without a clear understanding of a babysitter's experience and qualifications, they may feel unsure about entrusting their children to them.
Compatibility and Fit: Finding a babysitter who aligns with their parenting style, values, and preferences can be challenging. Parents desire a babysitter who shares their approach to discipline, screen time, and other childcare practices.
I took all the info I gathered from talking to parents and boiled it down to figure out what really bothers them. Turns out:
In Nigeria, busy parents are having a tough time finding babysitters they can trust. Safety's a big worry, and there's no go-to place they feel good about. What they really want is a service that does thorough background checks on babysitters, makes scheduling easy, and keeps communication crystal clear and that’s what I plan to give them🤞.
Laying down the groundwork
When laying down the groundwork for the babysitter app, I outlined some key values that will steer all aspects of the design and user experience. These principles act as my compass, making sure that every choice I make fits the bill for what our users want, like, and expect.
Safety First: Prioritize safety by implementing thorough background checks for babysitters.
Transparent Process: Ensure transparency in the babysitter hiring process, including clear profiles and reviews.
User-Centric Design: Design an intuitive interface that caters to the needs and preferences of busy parents.
Establishing essential feature for the babysitter app
In figuring out what this app really needs, I tried to focus on the features that solves the big problems parents face. These features are the foundation of the babysitter app, designed to streamline the process of finding, vetting, and hiring reliable babysitters for busy parents in Nigeria.
Babysitter Profile: Each babysitter profile includes detailed information such as experience, qualifications, availability, and ratings from previous clients. This allows parents to make informed decisions when selecting a babysitter.
Search and Filter Functionality: A robust search and filter system enables parents to narrow down their options based on criteria such as location, availability, experience level, and specific requirements (e.g., CPR certification, bilingualism).
Secure Messaging: Built-in messaging functionality facilitates communication between parents and babysitters, allowing them to discuss job details, availability, and any special requirements in a secure environment.
Booking and Scheduling: A user-friendly booking interface enables parents to schedule babysitting sessions effortlessly, with options for recurring bookings and flexible scheduling to accommodate changing needs.
Payment Processing: Secure and convenient payment processing allows parents to pay for babysitting services directly through the app, with options for different payment methods and transparent pricing.
Alright, so now that I've nailed down the basics for the babysitter app, it's time to dive deeper. With the essential features sorted out, I proceeded to work on creating a user flow. I mapped out every step of the process – from easy login and finding the perfect sitter with search filters, to simple chatting, booking, and secure in-app payment.

Project Takeaways
Simplicity is Key: Developing an intuitive and easy-to-use interface was paramount. I discovered that simplicity not only enhances user experience but also reduces friction and increases adoption rates.
User Insights Rule: Incorporating user feedback and insights into the design process is crucial for creating products that truly resonate with users.
Iterate, Iterate, Iterate: The iterative design process was invaluable. By continuously refining and improving the product based on user feedback, we were able to create a better experience over time.
