GoSquad is a mobile application that aims to connect like-minded fitness individuals in pursuing fitness goals and participating in workout challenges.
In 2021, the fitness industry has drastically moved toward digital fitness. Driven by physical distance and a stay-at-home environment, the demand for digital/hybrid experiences has accelerated the fitness community around the world.
As a solution, I designed a mobile application concept where fitness users can interact with like-minded individuals through interactive personalized workout sessions, groups and monthly challenges.
Fitness individuals and creators can curate workout content to engage their community.
Inspired by Strava and Facebook Groups, we bring a similar experience for individuals eager to train or workout with others within the same sport.
Fitness users can search curated content or join challenges while engaging with their friends and families.
Venture Capitals and Start-up founders in the industry state the importance of digital fitness communities through Facebook Groups and Strava. Interaction with these niche groups allows communities in the fitness industry and the products to grow.
When investigating GoSquad's competitors, I focus on products that have high user engagement and evaluate what engages users in the fitness world.
After analyzing the different products, I created a comparison chart to see existing features that made these products engaging and popular amongst users.
After conducting interviews, I notice more experienced participants in sports are more likely to track their workouts and rate their workouts as moderate-high intensity.
In order to learn more about digital fitness groups, I investigated online forums to gather information on potential user's thoughts on these fitness groups. According to these individuals, sweating together offers benefits that go beyond socializing. For example, social fitness groups offer abilities to achieve goals more consistently based on shared experiences.
How might we create an environment where fitness individuals can continue pursuing their goals?
Group 1: Have shared fitness interests and goals with others.
Whether users want to lose weight together or consistently working-out together, the app aims to bring together users through a specific activity or goal in mind.
Group 2: Want to track their activities while sharing with others their progress.
Tracking activities is a great way in achieving your goals. More advanced fitness users will track activities more effectively. The app aims to help novice fitness users to track activities every single day, including goals. Therefore, encouraging users to find a community where they can share progress and tips in these activities.
From testing, I notice two common emotions while conducting 5 testings: Uncertainty and Confusion.
Uncertainty
From the Create Group section to Browse, users are uncertain about what steps to take when attempting to create groups and searching for new curated workouts.
Confusion
Unable to view certain buttons, I notice how certain layouts can cause some frustration.
Through user testing, I was able to evaluate the frustration and uncertainties that users may feel in my design. Based on the results, I refine my designs to reduce these negative emotions.
From my testing, I create new iterations of the design to accommodate my users.
GoSquad has a place in the distributed digital fitness landscape. As a UX designer and strategist on this project, I found that exploring these forums and groups on Facebook and Strava helped me find gaps in the digital fitness industry.
