I turned an XTeInk e-ink reader into a physical companion for an AI assistant. Custom sprites, firmware, and an OpenClaw skill make the assistant’s activity visible through expressive states and messages.
The integration sends message text and state to the display as the assistant receives messages, thinks, responds, or uses tools. Eight states cover idle, alert, thinking, talking, excited, sleeping, working, and error.
The display shows mood sprites, activity, messages, and system status. I open-sourced the setup with instructions for choosing hardware, creating sprites, flashing firmware, and configuring the skill.
The result makes an abstract AI workflow tangible and understandable through a small ambient interface.
