Anther: Identity System for a Seed Archive

Sulman Cheema

Studio R&D, brand identity. The seed archive is our own invention. The strategy, the mark and the twenty plates are complete and generated from one source.

Brief

A seed bank makes a promise to people nobody in the building will meet. The identity had to feel careful and long-lived without turning into a museum label, and it had to hold across surfaces as different as a seed packet and a sign read from four metres away.

Architecture and design system

Strategy came first. The idea and the rules were written before anything was drawn, so every plate had something to answer to. The idea: held, not stored.
The mark geometry and the palette are built in Python. Every colour is computed in OKLCH and every text pairing is contrast-checked before it reaches a plate.
Strategy, mark, colour, type, packaging, signage, editorial and print are composed in HTML from that one foundation, so a single change moves every plate.

Motion and visual delivery

The mark is a seal, made to be broken when the seed is used. The palette stays quiet except for one green, the only colour allowed to mean alive. Puppeteer renders the plates to PDF and to high-resolution captures.

Impact

Twenty plates covering strategy, identity, packaging, signage, editorial and digital use.
Mark and palette generated from code, so the plates cannot drift apart.
Measured on the published build (Chromium 141, Lighthouse 12.8 desktop preset, October 2026):
Lighthouse performance 100: largest contentful paint 0.5 s, total blocking time 0 ms, layout shift 0.
The full twenty-plate system is an 80 KB HTML master, 18 KB gzipped.
The twenty-page print PDF embeds every font it uses.
