Bracket Quarterly: A Full Journal Issue

Studio R&D, editorial design. The journal is our own invention. The issue is written, designed and produced in full, down to files a printer can run.

Bracket Quarterly is a complete issue of a journal about structure in buildings, books and sentences. A made-up magazine is easy to fake with filler. This one had to read as real editorial work, with a feature worth reading, one consistent grid and print files that hold up.

The issue's pieces were written and the running order planned before layout began.

The grid comes from the subject. The feature is about the Song-dynasty module that sized every timber in a hall from one cross-section. The journal is built on that module: every page is a cai, 10 by 15, and every measurement derives from it.

Display and text sizes each set their own optical-size axis on a variable face, so headlines and body copy are drawn for their size. Fonts were subset in Python with fontTools.

The digital edition is one HTML file with its fonts and drawings embedded.

The digital edition turns like a printed issue: spreads move page by page by hand, with a grid view and full screen.

Twenty pages plus a five-spread system section.

A reader PDF and a press PDF with bleed and crop marks, both from the same master.

Measured on the published build (Chromium 141, Lighthouse 12.8 desktop preset, October 2026):

0 third-party requests. The issue, its fonts and drawings ship in one 1.2 MB file that works offline.

Lighthouse 100 for best practices and SEO, and a layout shift of 0.001.

0 JavaScript errors with reduced motion on.

Both PDFs embed every font they use. The press file adds 15 mm per side to the reader trim for bleed and marks.
