Finding experienced doctors and reputable hospitals in Mangalore can be overwhelming. Many rely on word-of-mouth recommendations from acquaintances to find specialists.

How might I design an app for patients to discover top-rated doctors?

Problem

Mangalore, a medical hub, has numerous doctors and hospitals, making it difficult for people to choose the right one. Residents of North Malabar often rely on Mangalore for advanced treatments, but the abundance of options leads to confusion.
Most people find top-rated doctors through personal recommendations, but getting appointments via telecommunication is challenging. Direct registration and agencies are the most common methods, but agents can divert patients for personal gain. RedNit aims to streamline this process, helping users find top-rated doctors and hospitals easily.

Simplifying Doctor and Hospital Selection in Mangalore with RedNit

Research: SWOT & Competitive Analysis

Simplifying Doctor and Hospital Selection in Mangalore with RedNit
Practo is India's leading online doctor consultation app, offering comprehensive telemedicine solutions. It provides video consultations and easy access to nearby doctors and hospitals. However, its design has drawbacks, such as hard-to-read information and lack of engaging visuals, leading to user frustration.

User Persona

Before sketching wireframes in FigJam, I created a semi-fictional character to understand users' perspectives. This involved researching market trends and interacting with real users to grasp their needs and behaviours.

Exploration & Ideation: Wireframes

I explored various ways users might interact with the doctor booking feature. Unlike Practo, which highlights "Featured Services," I focused on helping users find doctors and hospitals easily. The main page includes options like "Find doctors and hospitals near your location" and "Search doctor name" to simplify the user journey.
Key features on the main page include department listings and top doctors. The doctor profile page features an iOS calendar for scheduling appointments, along with a rescheduling option without navigating back to previous pages. The clean design uses white and red colors to enhance user engagement.

User Interface

Using the sketched wireframes as a foundation, I created polished mockups. I gathered design inspirations and created a mood board to visualize the final design. Given a tight budget, I minimized animations and heavy graphics to focus on a user-centric UI.

Style Guides

Components

I applied the Material design system, creating custom components based on user pain points. Experimenting with Auto Layout, colours, and spaces, I finalized a master component, streamlining the design process. My proficiency in creating design systems in Figma ensured that all elements were cohesive and functional.

Conclusion

By creating a rapid prototype and sharing it with ideal users, we transformed the complex booking process into a few clicks. Now, Malabar residents can easily find doctors and hospitals without relying on personal recommendations. The app allows users to identify specialists, view organ icons for better communication, and access top-rated doctors based on feedback, saving time and avoiding registration queues.
This case study highlights our efforts to simplify healthcare access through RedNit, providing a user-friendly solution for finding medical professionals in Mangalore.
