There was a desire to effectively address years of technical debt and brittle code in critical areas of the codebase while simultaneously building and shipping new features and solving critical bugs, all with an under-resourced department.
Laid out a multi-year technical strategy that effectively communicated timelines and milestones to pay down critical tech debt in key areas, continue shipping core features, and wrangle bug reports to an acceptable number. This included providing a department talent acquisition strategy and a prioritization recommendation. Finally, this strategy clearly stated variables that would affect the execution timeline of the strategy.
Quickly, the department was able to execute and meet each milestone in turn. All stakeholders were able to agree to a plan moving forward and be on the same page. The headcount plan was approved and one department split into many after there was a clear understanding of the prioritization challenges and issues facing the department.
