Crate & Barrel Checkout Modernization

Based in Northbrook, Illinois, Crate & Barrel is a leading retailer specializing in housewares, furniture, and home accessories with stores across the globe. 11hundred was asked to work with an internal team of strategists, user experience designers, developers, and senior leadership to modernize their checkout and cart experience. Over the course of a year we developed concepts and extended the existing design system to direct users through an easier mobile-first checkout, a payment experience that highlights alternate payments, and a design that prioritized accessibility.

Design System Integration and Extension

The design that was created leveraged the existing Crate&Barrel digital design toolkit, while finding opportunities to evolve it towards a more scalable and simple system set. Many elements were designed for reuse, to both aid in development as well as to create a clearer relationship between steps.

Mobile Support

Prior to this update, the cart and checkout experience did not support mobile devices. The design system elements we created were easily ported over from the desktop experience to mobile experience. This approach created a consistent experience for users as well as streamlined the development for the internal engineering team.
Following the launch of the new cart and checkout experience, conversions increased 8% the first year, with a spike in Phone and Tablet use.
